Hey all. I've been considering starting a home automation/ surveillance company targeted at poor people for some time using a cheap, sub-20 dollar equipment and a VPS. Most of the stack is near feature completion but with big companies like Amazon moving into the space I'm still concerned as to whether or not this will be a viable business model. It's not worth the trouble if I just get pushed out by some [insert bullshit buzzword] product that comes in and "connects your home to the cloud for 'free' if you let us datamine you" a year later. Is this even worth my time? I'm sick of having to just passively sit by and watch this world go to shit.

are you retarded?

Bluff. You need to go to the idea guy meetups and the various startup dog and pony shows to see how it works. You get enough of something to look like you're a threat to someone wanting control of that space, you make it sound like you're doing way more than you actually are and are way bigger than you've said, you pay for a bunch of press releases, and then you try to get bought.

You want to automate poverty?

Fucking hell, software really will eat the world.

Relatively poor. The setup I'm using now was about 30 dollars for the full install and costs 2.50 a month for the VPS that I could fit at least three people on. Most of the poor people in my area already have Obamaphones that they could use to access the system and trigger it to unlock when they drive up. The people that I've talked to would be able and willing to pay $5 a month for remote viewing, recording and automation.

Does your service offer rent-a-cops reaction group?

Does it also call police, fireguard, etc? Because this is what I'd expect from third-party surveillance company, from someone who fucking watches me 24/7/ for my own good(tm).

And if I were poor living in cardboard shack somewhere is United States, I'd rent a VPS myself and stream encrypted camera video to it. But I have no reason to do that, because I live in a place where nothing happens.

OP's target market is people who don't know how to do it themselves.

He's fucked if he only charges $5 per month. Unless he makes up on the install price he'll need 24k clients to make a living. And if each client requires 1 hour to setup OP will need to work 66 hours per day for a whole year.

On what internet?

"lifeline" internet around here is 3m/768k. Pushing video up that will saturate the line.

Besides most poorfags don't have fixed wireline internet. They are 100% cellular with things like obamaphones or FreedomPop. Or if they have some extra cash they get things like BoostMobile or some other pre-paid shit service for their 2nd hand iPhones.

Unless he uses this as a foot-in-the-dooe to selling to paranoid soccer mom's in the suburbs down the road.

They are already using a premium $69.99/month service though
