Neither. High availability with docker is completely possible without using k8s or swarm. All you need is a supervisor on each host which manages running docker-compose and some communication mechanism between the supervisors.

thanks, it seems like docker-compose is all i need. still new at this and had not heard of that yet. i thought it was either swarm or kubernetes. of course being a google product it's a given that kubernetes is the less preferable option, but seeing how hard it's been shilled recently i thought it might be worth looking into, guess not. all i'm trying to do is rotate a bunch of instances of one image every few hours so it's nothing complex.

What are you looking to do? If you are just trying to bring up and down a pre-defined list of docker containers then docker-compose is all you really need. People tend to over-complicate how easy Docker actually is to use.
