I do recall an F-Droid app that, provided both users had the app, encrypted facebook direct messages between the recipients, as so that the messages being logged in facebooks servers cannot be read.

I cannot find this app, and am wondering anons know of any apps that perform the same functions for instagram, snapchat, other social media platforms, etc.

Its called encrypting your contents with AES in plaintext form and sharing the key. Like tox, but over plaintext connections instead of tcp.

The technique is called of-the-record messaging and lots of apps support it.

Check google/wikipedia.

Pidgin is most popular tool for pc but it doesn't come with otr preinstalled.

Oh I totally forgot - someone recently pointed out that fb and g+ got rid of xmpp to stop people from evading NSA surveillance and data mining.

The Pidgin community however appears to have created a new module using the new protocol:

OTR is nice and all, but if you have the option, OMEMO is where its at:

> Multidevice support, double-ratchet encryption, offline support

Facebook is a website, you don't install it.

And their chat server is something entirely different.

How do I verify that I'm not MITM'd?

Pidgin has a range of options because nobody verifies fucking fingerprints when adding a friend.

Many, many people do. 1+B according to Google.

Maybe you meant one shouldn't* install it

>Maybe you meant one shouldn't* install it

Uh no.

We are talking about chat clients that connect to fb's chat servers.

Installation of "facebook" is not required. But you must have "internet" installed.
