Consumer trends. Same reason why thicc business grade laptops are out, same reason why tablets out, and of course the decline of 4:3.

Followed, if you want a umpc, I would check out the GPD pocket/win and related projects. It's chinese and runs on an atom processor, but I havent seen anything else

i don't trust chink stuff, they notoriously put spywares

GPD is chinkshit and has terrible support. Too bad Panasonic never updated pic related beyond that even then horribly anemic Atom.

>tfw no modern CF-U1

Holy shit those look useful. Much rather have something like that instead of a tablet.

How well do these umpcs handle installing and loading linux. What kinda ports would these have so I can load em in, or would I need to use like PXE

I've owned both the GPD Win 1 and the Win 2. They're both pretty good little machines. The Win 1 supports Linux Mint perfectly with a patched kernel and a few minor configurations, and the Win 2 supports Xubuntu perfectly if you install a driver for the xbox controller UI and make a few minor configurations. There is natually some loss of gaymen capability if you install GNU/Linux on it, but I got all the way through New Vegas in Wine on the Win 2 and really I don't fucking need nu-vidya if it means running Win10.

For web browsing the controls on the Win 1 are pretty good, but they're kind of awkward on the Win 2 so I ended up installing Qutebrowser to shitpost with keyboard bindings. But most of what I use the Win for is watching chinese cartoons with MPV at work, and the controls work pretty well for that even though the screen is of course tiny.

The obvious downside is that it is chinkshit. I broke my Win 1 by dropping it on a hot day and was too paranoid to send it back to the company to fix it, and of course the tiny form factor makes it impossible to troubleshoot on your own, so I just got a Win 2 instead. The Win 2 seems like a sturdier machine, and it uses an SSD instead of internal flash so that if I break this one I'll actually be able to recover my data.

I still check for updates on the Dragonbox Pyra on a regular basis though.

Forget about running anything besides XP or 7 on the U1, Loonix support is godawful for early Atoms.

hah, dude I broke my wallet for the openpandora and it was such a piece of shit. I dont trust that company to make a better machine

Nice design but that fucking price tho !.

Also not many games you can play on an intel 615

it died with smart phones becoming popular. only normal people that want them now are gamers. why use a small computer then you can use your phone to check Facebook.

 No.1020345

Why not just get a phone, install GNU/linux on it, and get an attachable keyboard??

 No.1020349

Smartphones running real Windows are coming. Wait a little, then when they will be here at last just buy a sliding keyboard to it and voila.

Desktops, laptops and tablets will all disappear quite soon and all that remains will be big screens to connect your smartphone to. So don't worry, Windows smartphones will come at last, for sure, because otherwise Microsoft is dead.

I have a GPD Pocket (gen 1). It's a pretty nice device overall, just small enough to fit into larger pockets (such as business slacks, or back pocket of jeans). The battery life is good enough for a day, and the arch/debian support on it is pretty good with a modern kernel. Wouldn't want to type an essay on it, but for quick messaging or browsing, it works pretty well.

I just picked up a Gemini PDA, and it pretty much the perfect form factor for a pocket computer. Its far, far from perfect, with meh specs, questionable support, and is way overpriced for what you get ($450ish for the non 4G version), but it does dual boot Android and Linux.

Like I said, the thing has a ton of issues, mostly with support on both the manufacturer and Linux side, but it's the best thing I could find for an computer with an actual keyboard that fits in my pocket.

Thats a phone with a keyboard.

 No.1020656

Mine is running on Linux with a dual boot option for Android, has no way to connect to a phone network, has multiple USB ports, and came with a USB C adapter to allow it to directly connect to a wired network.

Sure, it uses a phone touchscreen and smartphone esque guts, but....So what?

All the "pure" pocket computer kick-started and indie gogo campaigns I see are asking like $800-$1200 for a shit specced ARM powered clunker. Why not use the miniaturized technology focused on handheld computing companies have spent billions developing?
