Yeah, I've seen some of that, though it's not impossible to deal with. (I'd be making around 45-50k US a year if I was working 40 hours a week)
The thing that really annoys me about Freelancer is that rather than just taking 10% of every successful project and then trying to maximize the number of successfully completed projects, they instead put various obstacles in your way to completing projects which you can pay to remove, and then they still charge you the 10% of every completed project.
