I've used oDesk years ago, it was pretty nice. Unfortunately when I looked at its employer interface recently, it was soul crushingly awful.

Incidentally, where do you think is the easiest way for me to pay some third worlder like a buck an hour to do random online crap for me like travel arrangements?

Make your own personal website and/or start sending your curriculum to as many agencies as you can. Sites like freelancer, upwork and fiverr are a race to the bottom where anyone even slightly competent has to compete with third-world morons for a scrap of bread.

I tried doing work on Freelancer or some other such service over a decade ago. This is back when CSS was just beginning to take over tables but mainstream design philosophy was still extremely image heavy (think Newgrounds https://web.archive.org/web/20040610170911/http://newgrounds.com/) and no two browsers rendered anything the same way so you had to use tons of hacks to get anything right without falling back to tables. I ended up getting a job from a paj who sent me an image of a small-time Brazilian politician's website and asked me to rebuild it in HTML. I'm not sure whether he'd designed it in Photoshop or if it was just a screenshot of a layout he found on the Internet. Every aspect of the job was soul-crushing and I never finished it. He may still be waiting for a finished product.

You're on the right track. Try to leverage your connections. By that, I mean leave business cards and try to make personal connections. Basic word of mouth shit.

Yeah, I've seen some of that, though it's not impossible to deal with. (I'd be making around 45-50k US a year if I was working 40 hours a week)

The thing that really annoys me about Freelancer is that rather than just taking 10% of every successful project and then trying to maximize the number of successfully completed projects, they instead put various obstacles in your way to completing projects which you can pay to remove, and then they still charge you the 10% of every completed project.

Yep that's good advice, a fair chunk of the little freelance work I get comes through one client that just liked my previous work, and reliably gives me 10-20 hours a month.
