Are there any suggested programs/approaches to setting up multiple monitors on Linux? A cursory search seemed to suggest most methods split one screen across two monitors which isn't what I'm after, I essentially want each monitor on a separate work-space I can switch between with a key press.

That's how it is in dwm. Each monitor has its own tags (workspaces) and you can switch focus between the two with two keys

2) set it up in the gui or using xrandr

3) wtf are you asking this for it's the easiest shit on linux.

I don't know what are you trying to say. In Linux (in most distros at least) if you have two monitors it acts like that, ie if you maximize a window it only takes one monitor and it doesn't span across all monitors you have connected.

I'm using LXDE with Openbox, with the "quick" setup the attached monitor becomes my primary display and my main screen ends up seemingly having no DE, as right clicking brings up the Openbox menu rather than the LXDE one.

Alternatively I could live with the two screens being separate X servers, but as is when i change between then with Ctrl+Alt+F# the display on the non-active screen goes dark. How would I configure it to remain visible?
