"Disabling" ME by any unofficial method is useless:

>None of the known unofficial methods to disable the ME prevent exploitation of the vulnerability. A firmware update by the vendor is required.

T61-T400 Thinkpads ship with Merom and Penryn Core 2 Duos. ME is located outside the CPU on these microarchitectures and can be completely removed (unofficial HAP/AltMeDisable bit flipping not necessary). Remote exploitation is not possible. Any exploit would require physical access to these machines to re-flash vulnerable firmware, but then exploitation by way of physical access for any device is impossible to mitigate, management engine or not.

They're pretty good quality. I've had mine for a few years now, some of the plastic has chipped/cracked, and the screen also died (granted, I bought it used and I have no idea how long it was used before me, plus a replacement screen was really cheap, even with the warranty). HDD is starting to show its age, but there's a built-in mSATA port, so I'll just get an SSD around Christmas and slap it in, should boost it's lifespan a bit more.
Biggest problem though are the screws are really soft and are prone to having their heads stripped. It's a fucking nightmare trying to get one of those out.
Other than that, everything is easy to upgrade/replace, I got mine for $120 (which included the docking station, a must-have), nothing wrong with buying it used.

> firmware updates are not fully effective either, as an attacker with access to the ME firmware region can simply flash an old, vulnerable version and then exploit the bug.
> an attacker with access to the ME firmware region
Disabling ME *IS* effective, but they can simply reflash firmware.
It takes about 15 minutes to flash this machine, and it needs to be taken apart to do so. If someone has physical access to your machine and time enough to do that, they can do literally anything including installing fake USB drives, and replacing the motherboard.
Also, flashing would destroy the existing BIOS. If my computer boots up without Libreboot, I would notice. Libreboot erased all but a small section of the ME firmware.
It does not exist, therefore it cannot be exploited. Patches are temporary. The only secure code is that which does not exist. Also how can you be sure that the patch *actually* fixes the vulnerability
Do you even know what a threat model is? Statistically my X200 laptop is more effective than any other laptop on the market (excluding ARM and weird processors) against state threats that do not have access to the machine.

I know this is autistic but I would like to clarify for people - Lenovo completed their takeover right after Pentium M. Their first laptop they designed themselves was the X41 Tablet. Lenovo retained the rights for the IBM logo until around the T61/X61 - which is why you can sometimes find them with IBM stickers and without. If you want a "true" IBM ThinkPad you will be using an antiquated single core and graphics that basically make it a glorified typewriter that has no battery life, or a "classic gaming" machine. (And going back playing games with loading times that were several minutes long on Pentium III's just for retro cred is a bunch of shit.)
Lenovo got rid of the keyboard (which can usually be modded back in) with Ivy Bridge, and got rid of the sturdy style and chassis with Haswell. Don't fret about getting an X220 or something, they are just as sturdy as ThinkPads ever were.

I've not been able to find any information on differences between these and the Lenovo parts lookup utility doesn't recognize the numbers above. My uneducated guess would be that I should go for the 04X3679 as it's likely newer and maybe had some issues resolved or something. Doesn't really matter.
Look up SSD benchmarks, even the recently released top tear don't break 1gbit with random queue depth 1 reads / writes, which is what you do on a day to day basis and is the most pronounced number that makes things "snappy". Barely any nvme SSD, with PCIe lanes up the ass breaks 100mb/s. Unless you edit videos...

For people that claim to be so critical about everything regarding tech y'all better don't buy into the thermal grease meme. Just use industrial thermal grease, the silicon based one. (The white one) But buy it as industrial not specifically for computers. You can get it in big tubes that'll last you for decades for a pittance and I once worked for a company where we'd buy that stuff by the barrel. Computer thermal grease is a total ripoff business. That basic silicone stuff is more than good enough in pretty much all cases.
Then you only take a small drop (as small as about half a pea) in the middle of the IC you want to cool and then press on the heatsink. That will spread the grease even. The silicon based one also won't dry out that quickly as all the other cool xxxtreme 3d grame thermal shit they sell these days. if you have to spread it with some tool onto the IC you're already doing it wrong, and the meme diamond infused bullshit crap grease is also impossible to spread. That it has a higher viscosity and is difficult to spread I theorize is on purpose so it a) needs to be replaced more often because it dries out quicker b) will give wildly different results in cooling therefore making people believe the kind of grease actually matters. (It doesn't)

They are quality laptops with some models even having Canonical certification, just because they are made by Lenovo now doesn't mean they are crap (some of the cheaper ones are though, anything T series and up are good). The only thing wrong with them is the CPU and GPU can be a generation old with some models. In terms of being Apple clones not really since Lenovo is actually pretty good when it comes to replacement parts and warranties, if I remember correctly even liquid damage is covered under the warranty.

WWAN is a receiver for a mobile phone line to a mobile internet provider (Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc). So you don't have to go around wifi hopping. You can just get signal from a local tower, like a smartphone does, only your laptop is basically the smartphone. So you call Verizon, or whatever provider you want, and you add a number to your WWAN with a program on your laptop (usually you just provide you IMEI and they can give you service), said program is basically a phone line in your laptop. You PAY for the service, like you would your mobile phone. It's a good alternative if you're on the road for example, or you simply want a backup for your wifi and phone in case something knocks it out, like a disaster of some kind.

-many have shitty batteries that can't hold a charge, consider investing in a new battery
-get one that doesn't have cooling issues, overheating all the time will not only burn your thighs and cock, it will also burn out the hardware much faster as well.

Is the screen on the T480/T480s really as bad as everyone says, or is it just the usual consumer babby whine that only matters if you plan to watch Marvel movies on your laptop like a consumer pleb does.
Additionally, does anything speak for the T480 except the battery?

I'm trying to use a x230 with three monitors: the internal one and two external monitors (one DVI and one VGA). But if i try to enable more than two at once with xrandr, I get the message "Configure crtc 2 failed", unless I use small resolutions for the external monitors, like 800x600. I took a look at the xrandr source, but the only thing I learned is that the error came from the call to XRRSetCrtcConfig. So, can someone point me in the right direction? is there a log with more detailed information? (/var/log/Xorg.0.log does not helps) a debug/verbose option? should I try to debug the xorg server or the kernel? By the way, I am using Arch.
▶ No.1029564>>1029599

I don't think the external monitors work like that. Wouldn't the DVI be sending the digital signal that the VGA would be sending the analog equivalent?
▶ No.1029599>>1029643
>>1029564
There is no problem with that. If I enable only two monitors with xrandr everything is ok. For example, if I disable the internal monitor and enable both external monitors, I can see the image properly. It's like some resource is exhausted when I try to use three monitors at once.

Hey everyone, so I was looking at displays on ebay for my T500 and ran across this listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/42T0574-Lenovo-T500-And-W500-15-4-Wuxga-LCD-Display/183286094263?hash=item2aacb3d9b7:g:RG0AAOSw-iZcNCEe:rk:1:pf:0
It says refurbished and it's 108 dollars. I usually see wuxga screens going for way more. Should I go for it or ignore it?
Thanks for any input.

OK, thank you. I have another question. I was reading the hardware manual and I noticed that the wsxga+ and wuxga screens list my model which is a 2242-33u, but only as ' 2242 CTO ', while the wxga screens, which I have, list my model completely as ' 2242 33x '. Does this mean my model only supports the wxga displays?

I think you're just being retarded.
That's a flex PCB and can withstand folds but the problem is that you ordered an OLD keyboard that has likely gotten corrosion from long period of air exposure. All you'll have to do is just scrape off the non-shiny parts and you're good to go but too much or it'll come off. It's similar to those scratch-its that use lead that has immunity from interference and blocks x-ray while also acts as decent electric conductor at expense of poor durability.
Residual particles may still be in the port which likely if you pulled the flex board without releasing the lock or the old flex can be seen with missing lead/dark stuff. If there isn't anything you don't even had to buy a new keyboard in the first place. Just lightly scratch it until it is reflective.

Yes I'm aware there isn't a dedicated mSATA slot in the computer. What I'm trying to figure out now is whether there's a way to get an mSATA SSD or really any kind of SSD to work with the Express Card slot. There are mSATA to Express Card adapters on ebay but I can't find a definitive answer as to whether or not they work as bootable drives on the x200.

What's the difference between the W, X, T and R models.
I just lost my ThinkPad. I think it was either a T400 or T410 with an i5. I paid like $150 two years ago with 4GB and and SSD. One bad thing was that there was only one screw holding the hard drive cover and it would always fall off. How bad did I screw myself anons by losing it?
What would something like that cost now? And what's the best think pad I can get for around $50?

W = Workstation. Big, heavy, powerful, not great battery life. Designed to sit on a desk and be occasionally portable.
T = Terrific all rounders. Smaller than W series. Designed for working in all sorts of environments, and changing between them with ease. Tough, modular, quite moddable.
X = Most portable. Smaller than T, often lower power, lightweight devices. Excellent if you need something smaller, or portability is your biggest concern. Some of these also had the best battery life, due to lower power CPU and smaller screens.
R = Rarted. Do not use.
T400 is a solid machine, sorry for your loss anon. If IME matters to you, look at the coreboot/libreboot supported devices. If not, T480/X1C are excellent modern units.
