 No.7819

How important are aliens to the Star Wars experience for you, /sw/?

 No.7820

Zero. Don't give a fuck about aliens, seriously.

 No.7824

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

>>7820

What, you mean to tell me the cantina scene never gave you a sense of the weird and wonderful? No sense of a wider world filled with adventure? Come off it, m8.

>>7819

Oi, OP. You need an image for OT aliens too.

 No.7826

>>7819

I like having alien species to purge or enslave and twileks to rape

 No.7838

Was there a single one of the original alien species in the new movies, with the exception of a few Mon Calamari?

>>7824

Yep. Seriously, i was more interested, thrilled by the imperials discussing the dissolution of the Imperial Senate. Always found the aliens boring, like some zoo exhibition with weird noises.

 No.7842

>>7838

there was 1 wookie if that counts

 No.7844

>>7842

Not really, since Chewbacca is an actual character, even if he's underused. I'm talking more about background dressing. It just feels kinda weird that, for a movie that relies so heavily on familiar imagery, they don't use any of the iconic alien designs and instead rely on these uninspired, bland Peter Jackson rejects.

 No.7849

looking at that comparison picture, it seems like the sequel+rogue1 aliens are less creative than the prequel ones. the new ones all have big fucking heads and tiny eyes.

i always thought [prequel: 3rd row, 3rd from left with the red collar and eyes] looked cool.

fuck disney

 No.7850

Significantly important. The entire point of space adventures are to see new places, people, and things. You may agree more with the Empire and hate the xenos, but the xenos need to exist first in order to hate them.

every day I wake up and realize I will never sit at this table and talk about the dissolution of the senate and it makes me mad

 No.7862

my only annoyance with disney aliens is that they look more like they belong in dune or star trek than star wars.

look at op's pic. prequels have vibrant colors and odd shapes, whereas sequels are all shades of brown/orange with mostly humanistic features.

 No.7869

Important in the sense that Star Wars media should have some familar elements to make it feel like Star Wars and not generic sci-fi like the new aliens look like. It's not a major thing it's just another minor thing that adds up just like almost all the other new shit that disney wars has brought looking generic and non-Star Wars.

 No.7882

>>7855

Actually i always wanted to know more about the "Imperial Senate" for years. We only saw glimpses of glimpses of it, it was only a passing reference. Even after the Senate being expanded in the lore with the prequels and we're actually seeing it's creation, the classical Imperial Senate during the heyday of the Empire is grossly under depicted.

 No.7883

>>7862

>belong in dune or star trek

Not even that, they belong in Doctor Who at best.

 No.7884

This morning I read a youtube comment about how Asajj Ventress's species was retconned, so I dug into that. What I found was such an utterly pointless and convoluted mess of a story thread that I have been obsessing over it all day, trying in vain to puzzle out why anyone would think "the red-skinned guy with spikes growing out of his head and the bald girl with chalk white skin, both of whom had entire species written just to explain what they are, are now the same species" was a good idea.

So I guess aliens are pretty fucking important to the Star Wars experience for me.

Not really a fan of bobblehead-style aliens except maybe as enemies in shooter games. I wouldn't mind seeing more near-humans scattered around though, the ones that can wear helmets properly.

Wait a second, Zabraks are no longer canon?

 No.7951

>>7950

Not according to George, although the other CW writers managed to salvage that by creating a female zabrak beforehand, however zabraks now have only the same skin tones as humans. They also supposedly tried salvaging the ratattaki but now theyre just the big brained species from the cantina.

Very important. They remind me of how unique and out of this world the setting is and adds to the immersion and escapism, and each species offers its own unique aesthetic, planet and culture for all manner of cool or wacky settings. The nu-canon just puts let's focus on them as background shit because they want more human Diversity™ to the point where RO's cast is overwhelmingly human. And all the nu-aliens look dull as shit, just looking like either really ugly humans or animal genitals. The only exception being about a handful, which are basically rip-offs of Ughnaughts, Ithorians, Bothans and some Cantina residents.

 No.8028

Hating Lucas for the stupid shit does not make you a disney lover. For example, the endings to Anakin Solo and Jacen Solo's character arcs were going to be completely different until Lucas went full sperg and demanded Anakin's current course be changed because he didn't want his life resembling his Anakin. He had Alpha removed from the conceptual stage of Clone Wars and replaced with Rex because he didn't want three main characters whose names started with "A". And he demanded Revan's ghost not be added in CW and changed Darth Bane to look like a generic Darth Vader wannabe.

>Darth Bane

as much as i prefer his eu appearance, i'm assuming the specter design was more in mind what george had back when he created him in the 90s. there could be a balance of the two continuities where bane did all his orbalisk shit, then wore that ceremonial armor afterwards.

 No.8033

>>8029

Agreed as much as I hate to admit it. When Disney showed their preview of the Cantina scene, this guy was the only one who actually stood out and had a cool design with a pleasing aesthetic. Maybe its because he reminds me of a Kaleesh. Also what was the name of that other nu-Cantina alien they tried to hype up and even had a shitty "fanclub" for him?

 No.8034

>>8032

Fair enough, still maybe it wouldn't have bothered me so much if we had at least seen his ghost or some statue of him with the orbalisk mask.

>Also what was the name of that other nu-Cantina alien they tried to hype up and even had a shitty "fanclub" for him?

This. Feels foreign.

>>7819

How unimaginative. All the same toad-thing.

 No.8069

I can't shake the feeling like the sequel aliens were made with maybe three base structures in an editing program that were played with by distorting them until they got face that looked different enough from the last one they tooled out.

 No.8070

You know how concept artists do lots of variations and different takes on the same design so the one that fits best can be chosen? I feel like someone at Disney saw the work of one guy and put all of his different designs into production, not realising they were all just one character.

 No.8189

>>8058

one quarren in ROTJ is hardly noticeable, the quarren in the prequels were more prompt.

>>8045

the helmet is the only thing he's got going for him, the rest of the outfit is pathetic shit and looks like a kid took latex gloves and put it over his sweatshirt

 No.8195

>>7960

That is just fucking lazy that alien. At least Ithorians had those side vent things for expressing sound this is just cannabalizing the old stuff.

>>8033

There's a vid that covers that character. He wears a Kaleesh helmet but is not a Kaleesh and is some other type of alien who's also a pirate.

 No.8201

Still aren't a prequel creation. They were all over the early EU.

Now I know where I've seen this shitty alien aesthetic before. They look like they're straight out of Farscape.

 No.8247

honestly more important then the humans, the alien planets devloped different force powers, its why there is such a variety of them (although you wouldnt know if you watched the movies and thats it)

its why jedi all have slight precognitive abilities, yoda taught it to them, it was developed on his planet

its why with shoot lightning

Yeah, like the Miraluka, an entire species of force-sensitives who are blind but through the force are able to see more or less as well as other sentients even if they're not attuned enough to be able to use any other "powers" you might expect of a Jedi.

But it's not like any of the movies could ever have the chance to depict a character like that with any degree of, oh wait.

I'm never going to not be miffed by this.

Remember that alien scum wants you dead and were the largest backers of the CIS and behind all large criminal organizations in the Galaxy. Further given a 1000 years the Jedi have only promoted diversity which is a codeword for anti-human but this has changed, under the guidance of Sheev Palpatine we have create a new order and taken revenge against those Jedi traitors who'd prefer us live like the humans on Nar Shaddaa instead of make our mark on the Galaxy, the sacrifice of so many human lives was never for some multi-species Republic. But ironic isn't it, the Jedi were killed by the Mandalorians they had thought they had the Galaxy of.

It still pisses me off that the Twi'leks are gone because they didn't fit with Kennedy's agenda.

>>8069

>>8070

All the new aliens in Disney's Star Wars look like rejected designs for an alien/monster-of-the-week on Doctor Who. There's no sense of aesthetic so none of them are memorable. They don't look like they belong in the Star Wars universe (the porgs are the perfect example of that).

Copying this post:

People say that the constant buttfaces of the ST aliens are a problem but I think it's also the lack of varying color.

The PT had bright aliens everywhere to showing the diversity of the Republic era. And even though the OT had a darker and grittier aesthetic with their designs, many aliens would still have breight or large contrasting eyes so they'd still stand out (Greedo, Jabba, Jawas, etc.)

Too much of the PT aliens look like they were raised with an unhealthy diet in a dry California trailer park.

 No.8323

>>8320

Even with brighter colors, they're still ugly as shit and look like assfaces.

 No.8332

>>8309

Like >>8314 said, all the Slave Leia merch was taken out of the shelves the moment she took over LucasFilms.

The Twi'leks are nowhere to be seen in the new SW movies. The only Disney IP where you can find one is on SW Rebels but the show takes place before A New Hope.

I wish I had proofs of a deliberate decision from Kennedy but sadly I have none. I can only find a lot of coincidences (the twi'leks, the Slave Leia merch, the absence of cute or sexy characters in the new trilogy…) that fit Kennedy's personal agenda.

>>8320

They all have that "first pass on zbrush"/"m-my dog hate my designs… all I had was a can of Play-Doh".

 No.12242

>>12241

Almost every "original" design in Rebels is taken from some old sketch and given a new name, despite that shit already having pre-existing counterparts in the lore. Also, like you said, every new alien looks like something from Dr. Who, but what no one ever mentions is that most of the aliens are nearly identical to aliens seen in that Muppets' scifi show, Farscape. Both Disney Wars and Farscape also have a large number of aliens that look like genitals.
