All the new Disney characters are bland and have no screen presence so the b-plot would be boring no matter who he picked. The most I can say about Poe Dameron is that he's the best of a very bad batch but that doesn't make him a good character, he's just not as much of a dead weight on the movie as Rose.

Rian is incapable of writing a good scene, and when you think on it, he never has two men interact during the movie except Hux and Ren. His writing skills and understanding of masculinity are so poor he can’t make scenes with men talking.

If Poe and Finn had gone on the buddy sleuth misadventure that wound up a wasted effort it would have made a bit more sense and probably wouldn't have attracted as much negative attention even if it weren't "good." It would have also presented better if Rose or a new character like her were fleshed out of the background by being the one in Poe's place supporting the ground mission by defying Admiral Holdo, but then we couldn't have a woman from a literal vaginaocracy proving the light-skinned male wrong.

The whole middle of the movie was boned anyway. Finn and rose's adventure was just an incredibly boring outing, might have been a bit better with poe but the problem was ultimately that the scenario writing was shit, they couldn't extract anything interesting from a fucking underworld casino (the fact that they've totally failed to have a Han figure in the new generation of characters really hurts them here). Meanwhile this is distracting from the main plots of "a ship slowly drifting away from some other ships while poe gets lectured on gender studies" and "hobo Luke telling mary sue to fuck off, then she gets stronger anyway for no reason".
