People think he is cool because he was an amoral scoundrel and jerk.
That pretty much sums up people. Same goes for the Tony Stark popularity. People love assholes and enjoy being shat upon.
Solo was actually a loser and a coward who learned humility in the story, but that's not what people like about him. They just like the loser jerk because that's what they identify with the most.
The han solo movie has apparently been heavily re-written and re-shot because the previous directors, who did lego movie, were making it into more of a comedy. This allegedly annoyed the writers and the disney higher ups.
What's funny is that, this movie sounded lame at first until I found out that it could have been a buddy comedy. That may have been the single thing that could've redeemed the movie in my opinion. The thought of a "cool guy star wars kid" movie coming out is sickening. Almost as sickening as a boba fett movie.
