I've just finished rewatching DS9 and damn is it still good. The best villain (Dukat), child characters that grew up with the series and weren't obnoxious faggots like Wesley (Jake and Nog), well developed recurring aliens (Cardassians, Bajorans, and Ferengi), the best bromance (Julian and O'Brien), the best holodeck gimmick (Vic Fontaine) a strong, continuous story that carries you from the first season to the last episode, a final season that was effectively one huge movie that juggled numerous plot-threads, countless developments that deepened the lore of the universe, and all without stepping on the toes of or making the same mistakes as the other series. Maybe just a bit too much time travel for my tastes, though

Looking over and seeing what Star Trek is in the modern day just depresses me even more, knowing that we'll never get another series that comes close to measuring up to the quality of DS9

>Maybe just a bit too much time travel for my tastes, though

With the exception of TOS and TNG, I never liked any of the time travel plots. Trek has the bad habit of playing fast and loose with time travel post-TNG, all the lectures they gave about the delicate nature of the timeline was never taken seriously enough. VOY arguably did it the worst by completely disregarding the Eugenics Wars on two seperate occasions. ENT was also way over-saturated with time travel. I'm sick of that shit at this point.

>we'll never get another series that comes close to measuring up to the quality of DS9

True. DS9 had too many great elements working all at the same time.

>Julien and O'Brien's bromance

>Quark and Odo's reparte

>the Dominion War

>Gul Dukat

>adventures across 2 quadrants

>political intrigue

>the debut of one of Star Trek's greatest assets, Jeffrey Combs

I very much doubt the possibility of replicating that level of quality in any future Trek content.

>I very much doubt the possibility of replicating that level of quality in any future Trek content.

One of the things that made the progressive jump from series to series work so well was that it was similar teams of writers, producers, propmakers, costumers, and designers behind every series. They lost some people along the way, but at it's core, the people who made 90s Trek what it was saw the shows through for many years. Being able to take a character like Worf from TNG and give him several huge, meaningful arcs in DS9 was not something just anyone could do. So, right off the bat, regardless of budget or passion or claims of dedication, no new studio or team will be able to replicate that unique style and feel of Star Trek and most probably won't even try because they have corporate execs up their asses telling them to write Game of Thrones but in space.

The one thing that sucked about DS9? The opening credits sequence. It was just lame. They should have focused more on the ships leaving and arriving instead of a million boring shots of the station. That sleep inducing theme didn't help much either. It makes Voyager's lame opening look like Citizen Kane.

Hey I'm serious. Watch the openings to TNG and DS9 side by side. TNG is awesome and even makes me slightly aroused. DS9 makes a thanksgiving dinner seem like a hit of crack.

TNG https://youtube.com/watch?v=7tIWYtcwp2I

Holy fuck that was awesome. I actually started to get a boner. The music was uptempo and layered with harmony. It had the accretion disk and exoplanets for the monologue, then you get smacked with music and the Enterprise screaming across the screen tearing subspace a new asshole. My friend's kid yells, "YES!: everytime the Enterprise zooms by. The first season opening is almost exactly the same, except the planets are our own.

DS9: https://youtube.com/watch?v=2TsMyLt2BTM

Oh shit, is it over? I kinda dozed off there. It starts with that stupid comet trying to cropdust the quadrant with space farts, as we hear the opening theme begin, which I believe is officially titled "Sleepy Space Trumpet Lullaby." Then we are treated to a billion shots of the station. Oh wow some docking pylons. Oh look the bottom has red lights. Oh look docking pylons again. Wow red lights. It's finally over.

I'll admit I haven't finished DS9 yet. When looking for a video of the opening, I noticed there was a differnt opening for season 6. HOLY SHIT. It was exactly what I was talking about. There are ships flying around and we even see a galaxy class ship docked, which I choose to believe is the Enterprise. The theme still sucks, but the visuals are a million times better.

There were at least 3 versions iirc, season 1-3, season 4 when worfs join, and another switch somewhere along the way. The music was altered slightly or remixed, a heavy drum opening that wasn't there to in the early seasons. If you binge the series you'll notice those same SFX shots, especially the two Bajoran patrol craft are heavily reused, they even follow the same path every time.

Two questions: One, how well did Marc Alaimo get along with the cast, Nana Visitor included? Two, was Avery Brooks really a glorious nut off the set?

Speaking of the latter, watching Emissary again made me realize: Sisko never left Jennifer.

Unpopular opinion: I enjoyed DS9 but it's pretty clear that the best space station show was babylon 5

B5 set in the star trek universe would be the penultimate sci-fi. Nothing could ever beat it. JMS wrote the entire story arc before the show was even greenlit. Slow first season but seasons 2-5 grab you by the face and don't let go. They really did a lot with a near-zero budget (hence cheesy as fuck set and costume design). It is said that DS9 was supposed to be a vastly different show before this one made it out the gate. Some good actors in there

If any young anons have never seen it, push through the slow first season (where they do most of the worldbuilding). Do not skip episodes (except that jew episode, you'll know it when you see it) because every episode build into the main story arc and missing one will leave you confused.

I guess what you're saying is that it would have prevented enterprise's creation. or better yet, it would have prevented the creation of farscape, the flash, and the walking dead.

personally, I don't believe that. also, I liked farscape.

You're not the only one who enjoys Crichton's long decent into madness combined with the Jim Henson Company's alien costumes and animatronics.

But its nowhere near as good as B5's Narn and Centauri politics or the PSI Corps.

DS9 was basically just put into production after JMS had pitched the idea of B5 set in trek to paramount and been turned down because he wanted creative control. JMS latter got another studio to let him make B5 and do it his own way latter.

Make no mistake, DS 9 is by and large the best trek show made, but B5 was better.

Just imagine, a DS 9 with the Centauri and Londo as the Cardassians, G'Kar and the Narn instead of those whiny bajoran bastards and the PSI Corps instead of Section 31. All we need is something to take the place of the Shadows and the Vorlorns and you're set.

The worst part is, I feel like with all the love of Trek out there (and here on /strek/) the passion and talent probably does exist to make a truly great new Star Trek, but they will never be allowed to organize themselves, much less receive proper funding. There's just no chance.

Personally, my favorite opening was Voyager's. It had a medley of lovely and enigmatic space scenery mixed with a beautiful melody that, to me, perfectly captured the concept of boldly exploring the unknown. The show itself, of course, failed to do the same. My second favorite is ENT's Mirror Universe theme.

350532 (5) No.9615>>9617

>>9546

Voyager's is ok, but I always found it pretty unimpressive. The visuals are good. I particularly like the shot where Voyager is kind of reflecting in the ice belt, but the song is only a little better than DS9's weak ass theme.

Considering that every studio keeps handing off these projects only to JJ Abrams because he's the 'high concept sci-fi guy' and most large studios are in a constant state of paranoia that not hiring the most expensive, most well known talent (and I use that term lightly) will mean that a project will flop, the best we could ever hope for would be fan projects.. But they went and fucked that whole avenue over so hard while trying to establish STD as the only Trek in town.

Yeah, I'm pretty fucking sick of his hack-y bullshit too, but (((Hollywood))) is treating him like greatest director ever, which means our foreseeable future is more awful, over-produced, CGI overloaded, shaky-cam'd, oversaturated piles of crap that are treated like they are every bit as important to the genres they ruin as the films and shows that built those genres in the first place.

Halfway through season one of DS9 I wanted to give up and go back to TNG. DS9 is definitely better than voyager, but voyager is still decent. It gets better, then it gets better again when they run out of rejected TNG plots.

Yeah, too much space fantasy is what killed DS9 for me. The earlier stuff was more realistic/gritty/"down to earth" stuff that I could appreciate, since it was different from most Trek up till then. Turning Sisko into a Marty Sue near the end was ruining what made DS9 good imo.

I think some characters preferring to call them "wormhole aliens" for the longest time was the best way of demystifying the Prophets. They weren't Gods and they weren't magic. They just had the ability to observe time non-sequentially, which gave them the ability to set up events before they happened… But that wasn't good enough, so they had to talk in riddles and appear in vague visions and have literal fucking magic spellbooks that summoned demons and possessed people.

One of my cheesier "boy do I sure hate the normiescum you guys" fantasies as a child used to be to just have my own shuttlecraft and I'd just go out and live either in the wilderness of the Alpha Quadrant, or the Gamma Quadrant and just get all the way off the grid, just turn off the gravity, float around in the cockpit and watch old movies, and use the Bussard collectors to keep enough power to run the replicators and so on. Maybe park inside an asteroid and just float for a decade or two and be comfy.

Over the past 20 years, the main change to this fantasy is that I'd want to dump a few quantum torpedoes onto earth before leaving.

In reality though, it's just great having the show. Watching this show after several drinks after wagecucking all week is like wrapping up in a warm blanket. Especially if you actually wrap up in a warm blanket while you do it.
