I never understood why they dim the lights for red-alert. I know the writers chose to do it for aesthetics, but in a real situation it seems like turning off the lights in a crisis is a bad idea. Just imagine all the fresh recruits, stumbling around in the dark in a panic, desperately trying to make it to their stations before the ship explodes.
