As pointed out in another thread, Trek writers seemed obsessed with the Wild West to the point each show has one if not more episodes. What was so appealing about them?

Not sure if it's related but at the time TOS was being pitched I seem to remember the hook being "it's going to be like a 2estern- but in space. Atleast one fun fight per episode the captain is like the Marshall the crew his deputies and they always get their man. Or alien or whatever"

At the time the studios weren't looking for sci-fi because the thing making money at the time was westerns and selling pot metal cap guns and vinyl cowboy hat merch.

This phenomenon may be related

Or they might just have a bunch of generic cowboy gear laying around at every studio and it is fun to do westerns.

The original Star Trek came out in the 1960s so that explains the cowboy shit as much of TV at the time was comprised of such shows.

As for the later incarnations of Trek, the Wild West is iconic, when you see it on screen you know what it is immediately, and that's too tempting for set designers to ignore.

The best of the lot was ENT's North Star I think. If aliens abducted a bunch of people from 1800s America I can see them overthrowing their captors and eventually rebuilding a version of their old homeworld centuries later.

It's a dumb idea though, any race advanced enough to build starships could probably create dedicated droids to do tasks easier than they could train and maintain a population of alien slaves.

Because it is cool, that is why.

This didn't need its own thread, it could've been discussed in the time-travel thread just fine.

I disagree, especially when these episodes are a reaction image goldmine.
