The first version had the Enterprise's escape followed by a shot of Khan seeing it happen and screaming out in anger, but it was deleted because test audiences didn't like it. However, I still think it happened that way.

I don't know why this scene gets all the hate (unless it's the bad CGI of kirk and scotty inside the pod). In a movie full of unnecessarily long establishing shots of model space ships, this is one of the least offensive - along with the opening shot of the Klingon D7 where it spins over the bridge and the shot of the Vulcan shutttle (fully plausible warp-capability with giant fucking external detachable nacelle sled no less…). If you were viewing this in 1979 as a Star Trek fan, you'ld have been blown-away.

If they said if the Enterprise was the only "capable" ship in range it would have made much more sense. Ships nearby may not have the capabilities to deal with said situation.

That said it's hilarious how races like the Klingons are said to have no less than about 40 warships guarding their key systems at any given time meaning that the Federation are blatantly retarded
