The Repugnant Conclusion. Suppose you are managing a hell, and only have a finite number of demons available to torture people. If we just follow the principle, "more suffering people is always better", we'd end up with a large number of lives just barely not worth living. However, intuitively it sounds much better to focus on just a few victims and thoroughly torture them.

Okay but that's not at all how dark utilitarianism works. You need to see how your demons productivity changes with more people to torture.

It might be the case that after a few dozen torturees an additional one's suffering won't outweigh the reprieve that the others get, and so maximizing for suffering still ends up with a decent amount of suffering per person.

If you're a solipsist, then the trolley and people aren't real. All that matters is your happiness.

The effort of pulling the lever is all that might move you; or, arguably, what society will think of you.

If you genuinely hate people, then I guess you might be pissed that you're saving that dude by killing the others.
