Current mobile phone technology defines circular "cell" surrounding each cellular tower. (For simplicity, I'm omitting what happens wirelessly between the handset the tower.) Once your connection is at the tower, it goes into wireline infrastructure. Regular telephony infrastructure: central offices, fiber optics, switches, etc.

Current cellular technology to the best of my knowledge (I'm not exactly up to date) does not utilize SAT (satellite) relay in any way.

It would be possible to define an architecture that employs satellite in some way to relay signals from cellular users. The geosynchronous satellites are too far away and introduce mega delay into the call or data transmission. Buffering and prefetch can help alleviate that for data traffic but not for voice calls, which cannot tolerate much lag.

So if somebody is designing an architecture to relay cellular signals by satellite, I presume we are talking about NEO satellites, near earth orbiting. To reduce the lag inherent with distance.

This would require some kind of sophisticated mechanism to hand off the cellphone between satellites. Handoff between cell towers (cells) is what current wireless protocols do when the user is mobile.

So in my judgment it probably IS technically feasible.

Why scientists would be killed while researching it, I have no idea, other than the obvious one that their research was seen as detrimental to the interests of those who killed them.

The other issue I'm not addressing is what kind of RF power levels would be required. If you want long battery life and users not to scream worries about RF near the head (as they should), then RF power emitted by the phone has to be tiny -- typically 500 mW or less IIRC. Somebody will probably correct me who knows the exact number.

Encryption of the wireless protocol already exists and would be no more of an issue for SAT-relayed cellular than it is for today's terrestrial cell-based mobile telephony.

Although the security of today's encryption algos has become highly doubtful in my mind...
