Today public schools are an engineered gateway to make Big Bux from the student loan racket which creates a bunch of braindead zombie debt-slaves who rally behind big government. If you want to know how to actually make a decent living and be productive in society look no further than attending trade schools. Trade schools are not anything like college. They are much cheaper, and will train you with professional skills in fields you can still find work. Many trades still offer 50K to 80K a year depending what it is you train for. in most areas around the country that is pretty decent income, enough to boost you right into middle class living.

It is nice to live on a farm but it has its ups and downs. 1) living on a farm entails a lot of work and land management, 2) typically internet connections are still dial-up, adsl, or at best you'll have wired cable if you are very lucky [still uncommon], 3) many farms no longer have families doing a lot of the labor but local Agra industry who rents acres from you to grow crops en mass and then you get a cut of the profits.

Typically farms can be pretty expensive depending where you are looking unless its out in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere (and in that case you need to live like a prepper would and have a lot of extra goods/supplies). In his case, you'd be driving 2 hours or so and back just to re-stock those supplies every once a month or so (meaning you'll need to maintain your pickup truck well). Going this route you can also learn to can and jar your own foods too for storage, but you'll still need a source of income (selling goods at farmers markets, creating a local lawn service, etc).

I almost forgot you must factor in farms having septic tanks which cost money to clean out and maintain. There are services for that, but if SHTF it would need to be done manually which would be more than a pain in the rear and you'd need proper equipment and sanitation.

What I mean by a "braindead zombie" is someone who is brainwashed by the commie educational system we have today who goes 80K into debt to get some liberal arts degree that is worth dog shit. Or someone who gets a history major which is almost worth next to nothing today. Even those with STEM degrees have to compete with thousands of H1B visa-granted cheap foreign laborers today (good luck).

In my honest conclusion? Not worth it! You can spend 5K on a trade school, learn a skill within a year and start working a productive job that pays 50K per year easy. How is that mindless? It's a lucrative opportunity to improve your skills and make a good living. Meantime you still can prep for SHTF/civil war/collapse, you'll have more money to do that - without the burden of governmentized student loan debt.

I hate to break it to you, but the work and effort of keeping up a farm is enormous, especially if your not renting off your acres to Agra or the beef industry. If you think that doesn't take a lot of hard labor you are sorely mistaken. Not only that, in most eras very expensive as well. Like it or not you'll need a source of income. So you'd likely be butchering cattle or growing your own crops without the industry and having to find places to sell your goods in order to make income, or like I mentioned some set up local lawn care services in nearby towns to make some extra cash. All that production [use of heavy equipment] and land maintenance (including septic service, utilities and tax) costs money.

I'll give anyone food for thought who wants to look into farming. I once considering doing the same. I found 21 acres of property, a nice farm house and big barn for storage. It was 1 hour away from the nearest small city. Total cost? 350K. Now that's not too bad if you were to rent most those acres to big industry and get paid a percentage of profits they make per year right? I looked into it: on average 12K to 15K per year is what was normal re-reimbursement for renting that land. So then I figure, do I really have enough to keep up the mortgage and utilities? ONLY if I kept my job near the city, which would be around 1 hour away. That's two hours a day driving back and forth to-from my job, that's a lot of money towards gas. Then I factor in property taxes and all the other stuff including septic maintenance, new shingling needed, etc. Combine that with shit internet service and I realized I was not up to it because I didn't think I could get enough from the home I live in (which I now own). This was some years ago btw, before I retired. The point is farm property and all the maintenance required is not cheap in most areas, even if you get industry involved to help out the cost of living. You need a steady income and if your going to do it all on your own a whole lot of time on your hands, with help.

For anyone that has the money to invest rural I say it is 100% worth it, but the point is this: know what you are getting yourself into. If you don't have decent income or savings and help from industry paying you a cut for using the land, you won't be able to make it for very long. And if your doing it all on your own, that will be your job which includes the cost of heavy machinery to produce all that grain/crops you'll need to sell off. Its a lot of work, a lot of time and dedication doing it. Image board users would be forced to break their addiction to the web too and the poor internet service could help you with that lol. Its great to live that kind of life but it comes with a price and a lot of work.
