Recently Sam put online the basic design document for the joyride game, and in all honesty, while interesting, it just looks like the ramblings of a teenager, and for someone that has been thinking about making a game for +3 years, it's amateur at best.

Not really taking into account that just making a good commercial 2D isometric shooter is something that requires experience, they(he) are thinking about adding different characters, gameplay mechanics, skilltrees and various crazy shit that sounds like whatever kid you ask around "what would you like in a game".

Videogames are a big market with a lot of competition, and I from my POV I don't see the appeal. I would like some sort of MDE "interactive CD-ROM" as they were called, I care about the aesthetic, humor and actual narrative, but trying to actually make a game (and trying to sell it to a bigger audience) is a fool's errand.

I really the book, was kinda hit or miss, but there was a lot of wacky content there, I think that the game will be a big endeavor with little to show more than (what probably will be) a mediocre 2D game.

Also, general MDE games and discussion.

Whoa, you mean Sam Hyde isn't a seasoned professional game developer and it shows? Next you're going to tell me it took a lot of practice to get his mirror videos to be good.

I suggested that Sam make Joyride a 2.5D shooter, like Doom or Strife. I'll still buy it if it's an isometric shooter, but don't pretend 2.5D wouldn't be cooler.

Sam said this project will take about ten years, I don't think he understands how long that really is and how many games with development cycles that long come out like shit.

Not every game like that will come out like TF2, which took nine years to make. Most of them will be more like Duke Nukem: Forever.

the point of the mirror vidos was not to be good, am I mistaken?

It's also weird, thinking that he understand how having a constant team doing shit can get you dry in notime.

And really, do most of MDE fans actually care about a GAME, or care more about the MDE feel/narrative ??

I think that just jumping to the water without any experience is just a weird mistake for someone to do (specially of Sam's age).

I do hope for the best, but IMO I'd prefer a visual novel full of MDE aesthetic, than a shooter that (most likely) will have subpar gameplay.

It would be good if was an RPG, like Earthbound. There's lots of opportunities to put funny shit in an RPG, and it's hard to mess up the gameplay. It also wouldn't take nearly the same amount of money and time to make compared to a shooter.

If it's going to be in 10 year development, there's no way Sam is going to get a return on all the money he's put into it. There aren't that many MDE fans out there, and I doubt Steam or any other aggregator would host it for him because it will probably have loads of offensive content in it that violates the ToS. Any retail stores are even less likely to sell it for him for the same reasons.

I was thinking of that exact game when I made my post, I was deliberating whether to use it as my example or TF2.

I went with TF2 ultimately because it was more known.

This, you can't really fuck up a RPG's gameplay because it's all the same shit anyway so he could completely focus on the aesthetics and humor and leave muh game mechanics as a side thing.

If all anyone cares about is the MDE aesthetic why doesnt he stick to just that? Of course itd be cool to have an MDE movie/series/game/comic/book/album etc etc but it's doomed to fail. Why doesnt sam just start a website where he can post his videos, ramblings, fan content, t shirts, whatever all in the same place…. i mean why not. It's what he chose to do with his life, why does he feel the need to diversify and extend out into unmanagable projects… hes dishing out 500 bucks an episode, 5000 on the next one, on his vertical video compilation series? im sorry but that sucks. He's gonna make a video game? why? i wont play it. i miss mde….

 No.2905

also, 10 years? i wont have internet in 10 years. i could be dead in 10 years. you think anyone in their late 30s/40s is still gonna be F5'ing their sub box for new vertical vids?
