He was the first thorough human trainwreck that many have ever encountered. That alone made him broadly mesmerizing. You can't discount the 200X shock value of a grown man who drinks his own cum, destroys his own house and draws strange, explicit Sonic comics. Just like with more classic and direct shock content (e.g. Goatse or Lemonparty), what was truly funny was the social aspect; dropping an oblivious individual into it and witnessing their reaction.
I can see where you're coming from when it comes to the groups who wrestled to control and destroy the autist's life; the weirdos whose mental balance isn't much better than their subject's and who plotted from behind the forums that became Kiwi Farms. I won't (and couldn't) defend them. Do know, however, that they do not represent everyone who used or was entertained by Chris' antics and misfortunes. I was actually thinking just that after I had made my post last night and left, how despite what I wrote, I too found myself at least watching some of the chris-chan related media out of interest, or "mesmerization."
