The problem with hydroponics is it requires a constant supply of petroleum derived fertilizers in order to keep it running. We'd be better off with learning how to properly compost and conserve/grow the local ecosystem.

You're operating under the assumption that the growth will continue uninterrupted until we hit 10 billion. Odds are much more likely that china will try something stupid and WW3 will start in the next 30-40 years, prompting massive amounts of deaths as people kill eachother and starve from supply lines being disrupted. Modern society simply cannot exist without a slow-drip IV of supplies from global markets. I'm more concerned with being able to grow my own food indefinitely once the shit hits the food supply.

THAT BEING SAID, if you're concerned with production efficiency, then you should try to find a way to make a vegan diet that doesn't make people want to kill themselves. Because if we got rid of meat/dairy we'd be able to supply a shit ton of food. Not to mention that we could transform some deserts into arable land if we grew a backbone and shot nigs once they started going all gibsmedat once we got it going. Also, you can only rely on petroleum fertilizers for so long before we run out and the system collapses.
