Is there anywhere that sells even half-decent rifled tubes for even something like a .22LR? It seems like every option for a rifled barrel is to spend a ridiculous amount of money for a super high quality top of the line barrel when all I want is a piece of mild steel with a spiral cut down it that I'm not going to get too worked up over if it doesn't come out quite right.

Or am I going to have to buy rifling buttons and make my own just to get lower-end barrels?

I'm not sure what your price range is, but X-Caliber and McGowan barrels make good stuff.

Those look like the sort of expensive high end pre-formed things I don't need at the moment.

I'm looking more at something like this. http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/557blank-17-5-56mm-223-17x1-062-gunsmith-edition-round-barrel-blank/

Only thing is none of these are chambered.

I mostly want to work on the mechanisms of action rather than trying to build a pre-made design like an AR which the vast majority of barrel offers are for

A chamber reamer might make sense depending on how many barrels you're going to wind up using. Or if you can make the barrel attach to the receiver the same way as a popular gun with aftermarket or even used barrels available it would give you more options for premade barrels. Using an attachment system from a bolt-action could be a good idea if you're planning on using a different gas system or something completely different like a toggle-lock or blowback since the barrel won't have gas ports or anything else that you wouldn't be using anyway.

t. has never actually designed a gun

I've got most of the rifle designed. I'm going for making a variant on a lever delay blowback in .223.

Since I'm more making proof of concept using different systems' barrels might be better.
