So are the mounts around the barrels designed for transport of the barrels? They look like the same color.

bede4e  No.602508

They're designed to mount the gun in the turret. The fact that they fit on a flat truck is just a happy coincidence.

How does that work?

Also if it weren't for the battleships, how fucked would had our troops had been in their island hopping campaign?

How old are you buddy?

Slightly less fucked than they were originally. The shelling of islands in the pacific theatre wasn't exactly effective due to the fact that the Japanese were so well entrenched in the islands themselves. They had tunnels hundreds of feet deep spanning over dozens of miles, and this could have been on a single island, such as Iwo Jima or Okinawa. The shellings did kill some Japanese due to cave ins and such, but those weren't very many, maybe only a few hundred out of tens of thousands.

More fucked, excuse me.

Read "Flags of Our Fathers" for an excellent understanding of this kind of entrenchment.

So the new rail guns wouldn't have made a difference unlike what the navy and congress are claiming?

If it weren't for the Battleships you would lose the war duh. How else would you protect troop transport and aircraft carriers from Japanese battleships and aircraft?

You know I wonder if it would be possible to set one of those up to fire from a truck? Even if it is just for one shot.

Interestingly, many soldiers preferred fire support from destroyers or cruisers, since their guns were more in line with typical infantry artillery.

Couple escort carriers and some DDEs should do fine :^)

We should bring out those ancient ww2 battle ships out of retirement rather than to pay for the cost of a modern day destroyer or cruiser to build something that's not a morale pit.
