The shelling of islands in the pacific theatre wasn't exactly effective due to the fact that the Japanese were so well entrenched in the islands themselves. They had tunnels hundreds of feet deep spanning over dozens of miles, and this could have been on a single island, such as Iwo Jima or Okinawa. The shellings did kill some Japanese due to cave ins and such, but those weren't very many, maybe only a few hundred out of tens of thousands.
