A chemistry student in the Ukraine was found dead with his jaw blown off by what is believed to be exploding chewing gum, according to reports.

The 25-year-old's disfigured remains were discovered at his parent's home in the northern Ukrainian city of Konotop, reports in the Eastern European country said.

The young man, who studied at Kiev Polytechnic Institute, was working at a computer late on Saturday when the alleged explosion happened.

"A loud pop was heard from the student's room," the ukranews.com Web site said, citing an aide to the city's police chief.

"When his relatives entered the room, they saw that the lower part of the young man's face had been blown off."

A forensic examination established that the chewing gum was covered with an unidentified chemical substance, thought to be some type of explosive material.

The student apparently had a bizarre habit of chewing gum after dipping it into citric acid, Russian news agency Ria Novosti said.

Officers found both citric acid packets and a similar-looking unidentified substance, believed to be some kind of explosive material, on a table near the body, the agency continued.

Investigators suspect that the student simply confused the packets and put gum covered with explosive material into his mouth.

Forensic experts were to travel from Kiev to investigate the substance, as local authorities feared it may explode if transported.

I remember this story, he was a pretty good chemist, came up with some unstable (but powerful) explosive for his masters thesis.

>came up with some unstable (but powerful) explosive

What was it?

>When his relatives entered the room

Started screaming and going full panic while their son bled to death while listening to the screams of his own family

Don't remember, it was like ten years ago. I think it was too unstable to be of any use, just an interesting chemical.

It only blew his jaw off, I'm sure he died before it swelled up and looked too bad.

Considering his jaw blew off, the force likely smashed his brain.

He must be drunk enough to confuse citric acid packet with other explosive stuff.

Maybe. But then some people are naturally absent-minded. I for one have brushed my teeth with shaving cream more than one in cold soberness, after eight hours of sound sleep, and enough caffeine in my bloodstream to send a lesser man into comma. And based on my personal experience, it's surprisingly common among those who have a scientific or egineering turn of mind, especially those who are extremely passionate about their field of expertise (regardless of how much actual talent or productivity they have in it).

That's probably the only occasion where the "how it feels to chew 5 gums" reddit maymay would be funny.

This. During my bachelor's thesis the only reason I did not fell down a cliff during my research was because cliffs were part of my research.

This, it really happens often enough that my sleep cycle is generally rotating forward constantly. One of the few things to enjoy as a NEET is no fixed regime, i always walked extremely sleepy before, even with little of actual work, simply because of a fixed time to wake up.

Yeah, much too often I've been saved from being hit by cars by an acquaintance who pulled me back from the busy street I was walking blindly into because I had a problem on my mind.

Also, as an interesting anecdote, we had this Algebra professor back in the Uni. A young, tall, lanky sort of chap. The very embodimend of the absent-minded professor stereotype. I once had witnessed him walking inside the department's hallways, on a rainy afternoon, with his umbrella open indoors, and he couldn't get through a doorway because his umbrella got stuck in it! I'm prepared to swear it took him more than a minute to realise what was wrong, closed the umbrella, walked through the doorway, and then opened it again, holding it above his head as if he did not even realise that he was indoors! I would have laughed had I not walked twice into a utility pole that very day because I was stuggling at the time with a rather difficult problem myself I don't remember what it was, but took me nearly a month to solve it. An existence proof of sorts, IIRC.

This. I'm either sleep deprived or my sleeping/ waking hours tend to creep forward. Being a NEET helps to a great extent. also the fact that I have covered the tiny bedroom window with the thickest sheets I could find, layer upon layer, so none of that pesky sunlight thing to bother me. Then there is also the fact that my faculties tend to work better during the night. I am generally inclined to believe that hauses should not have windows at all, although I'm not averse to medieval castle-style peepholes.
