Post Florida massacre, in gun-friendly Vermont, lawmakers pass firearms control bill

Vermont lawmakers gave final legislative approval on Friday to a bill that raises the legal age for buying firearms and expands background checks, becoming the latest state poised to tighten gun restrictions after last month's Florida school massacre.

Updated: Mar 31, 2018, 04:30 PM IST

>Vermont lawmakers gave final legislative approval on Friday to a bill that raises the legal age for buying firearms and expands background checks, becoming the latest state poised to tighten gun restrictions after last month's Florida school massacre.

>The Democrat-controlled state Senate approved the measure, S55, in a 17-13 vote, according to the online legislative record. The bill passed the state House of Representatives this week. The measure now goes to Republican Governor Phil Scott, who has shifted his stance and voiced support for some gun controls after the arrest in February of a Vermont teenager accused of threatening to shoot up a high school. The incident came two days after a former student killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14. Scott's support for gun controls marked a sharp switch for a governor with a 93 percent approval rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA) gun rights advocacy group in an otherwise politically liberal state with a reputation as a pro-gun stronghold.

>Vermont, a largely rural New England state with a passion for hunting, is one of two dozen states where efforts to curb gun violence have gained momentum since the Feb. 14 shooting rampage that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The Vermont bill raises the age for gun purchases to 21 and expands background checks for private gun sales. It also bans magazines of more than 10 rounds for long guns and 15 rounds for pistols as well as rapid-fire devices known as bump stocks. Vermont Public Radio reported that the Senate would take up two more gun-related measures next week. Both are aimed at removing guns from homes in cases of domestic violence or when someone is at risk of imminent harm from firearms, it said.

>Gun control advocates say the turnaround in Vermont and other states has been propelled in part by the groundswell of student-led lobbying efforts and protests calling for firearms restrictions. After the Parkland massacre, Florida's Republican-controlled legislature swiftly passed a bill that raised the age requirement and set a three-day waiting period for gun purchases and allowed the arming of some school personnel. The measure was signed into law by another Republican with strong NRA credentials, Governor Rick Scott.

Oregon has a couple initiative petitions that could be on the ballot this year; 43 would ban magazines over 10 rounds and anything that it defines as an assault weapon while 44 adds storage requirements. Thanks to it's bayonet lug, even the Garand would be verboten by 43 if I'm reading this definition correctly:

>“Detachable magazine” means an ammunition feeding device that can be loaded or unloaded while detached from a firearm and readily inserted into a firearm.

I'm pretty sure this is actually worse than california; there's no way these could actually make it onto the ballot or pass, r-right?

Not a single 56%er or Oath-larper will do a damn thing about it either. Despite all this talk, I don't have faith that most Americans wont immediately just cuck out and hand over weapons. Too gentrified, all the boomers, gen Xers and mellinials will just hand them over, they lack the guts. They are too afraid of consequences. Barring the extremest types, most of the people getting shot will be __>25. Bunch of kids who are hardcore left or right, and the rest of the country will cheer on the death of their children. I guarantee it, I have met a lot of outspoken gen Z, all the others run off the "As long as it doesn't effect me" mentality, however it all effects the kids, and they resent the older generations for it. I doubt they'd have any hangups, call it youthful stupidity, or righteous anger, maybe both. Look at what a lot find funny, a lot of existential and suicidal memes and a lot find the whole concept of a war appealing. Though maybe I'm just seeing things. Something will happen soon though.

d16abf No.569817

>I don't have faith that most Americans wont immediately just cuck out and hand over weapons.

Majority won't, they will hide them. However, they won't do a god damn thing for the same reason your fat ass and my fat ass ain't gonna do a god damn thing, being that we see nobody else doing anything so we think that no one else is willing to do anything. They, and we, will probably only fight once backed into a corner, because America is still far too well off to get people motivated enough. Comfort leads to complacency which leads to weakness of the spirit.

The reason le epic totally nazi gen z might have a chance is because every single generation before them is steadily driving this country into the fucking ground at a rate that they might be knowing hunger once they reach adulthood. What you described with their gradual apathy toward human life is a sign of the way their cards have been dealt and how on some level they realize that and are preparing themselves mentally.

He doesn't know about the "ammunition feeding device" language which is ((coincidentally)) popping up in all these laws. From Vermont:

https://legislature.vermont.gov/bill/status/2018/S.55

> As used in this section, “large capacity ammunition feeding device” means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept:

> (A) more than 10 rounds of ammunition for a long gun; or

> (B) more than 15 rounds of ammunition for a hand gun.

Fuck this communist state. Guns were our ONE FUCKING THING! We're still circa 1920's white, so it isn't like we have an actual gun crime problem. They just want to be like the cool kids in California.

56cafa No.569987

Doesn't the M1919 use a disintegrating belt? Under the wording of the law a belt make by attaching links together is banned regardless of length, since it "can be readily restored or converted to accept" an amount of ammo above the limit.

That law bans the use of any gun requiring such a belt.

In fact I'd say it probably bans belt-fed guns altogether, since even for cloth belts they can say it's "readily convertible" by stitching more on.

The cuckservative wants a big public signing so he can make a fucking event out of pissing away over 200 years of freedom.

Real irony? This thing started out as a pro gun Democrat's bill to let Vermont police departments sell seized guns to FFLs before they parasitized it with amendments to get their bullshit through faster. Poor old man ended up voting against his own bill.

>>569987

I've said it before and I'll say it again: They know it's incoherent. That's the point. It forces those who wish to obey the law to follow the strictest possible interpretation and makes it harder for newbies to get into the activity in the first place. They're playing the long game. The fewer people who have real experience with weapons, the more people they can inculcate hoplophobia in.
