Options include S&W SDV9 at 300$. It's closer to a full size pistol at 16+1 and the trigger isn't great. For a smaller gun (6/7/8+1) the Walther PPS M2 is another great choice at 300$. Right now gunbuyer is offering an LE version with night sights, 3 magazines, and a hard case for 320$. Both of those guns are Glock style takedown, which makes it easy to clean. (If you find a gun in store it doesn't hurt to ask if they price match online stores!)
As far as a safety goes, get a good and stiff holster (expect to spend 55-75$) and the trigger safety is all you need. (Appendix carry < 4 o'clock IMO) Just keep your finger off of the trigger until ready to shoot. Carry without one in the chamber if you aren't ready, but understand a manual safety is largely irrelevant when you practice the 4 rules.
Ammo is another consideration, at about 11-12$ for 50 FMJ range rounds you'll need a few range sessions to learn how to use the gun. Even better if you can practice drawing and firing if you live in a rural area. Once you are trained the cost of defense ammo is .50-1$ a round. You'll want to cycle at least a box worth thru your gun to ensure it feeds properly, as well as ease of shooting.
Consider getting a good light on your gun (75$) and prices are at 225$ just for peripherals.
You will be spending a good amount on your gun if you plan on using it properly! Cry once and buy once! Get a quality gun by spending a little bit more now.
