I don't have a carry permit or a handgun yet for somewhat specific legal reasons, so something I would do back in highschool if I didn't have my knife on me in a shady neighborhood (the school I was at was roughly 90% black) I would carry a roll of quarters in my pocket. We have self defense laws too, and like in Britain it's a defense, like an insanity defense. Meaning you're already convicted of murder in the eyes of the law, and you got to prove defense somehow when all you got is your word. Jury nullification can't be made illegal under common law, basically all the judge can do is replace the jury and repeat the trial over…. but if 1 in 12 still nullifies a second time, the defendant can sue for "quick and speedy trial" and get out of court. That is jury nullification, not just one guy in a random jury blocking the vote, it has to be repeatable.
In the case of Canada, abortion only became legal because three separate juries couldn't convict a doctor of murder. The law was then sent back to parliament, and voted out.
I still think abortion is murder but it's a good example.
