What do you think anons? I've had this bubba'd sks for some time now. It was a commiefornia victim and had the nade launcher cut off and a stub welded onto it. I've since taken it off and threaded it 14LH for an AK slant.
I'm just not sure what do do now. I can never return it to its former self and I'm sure as hell not going to tapco shit up.
Its unmatching mostly, trigger guard/ stock/ receiver match but thats it.
Stock is beat to shit, All the grain lines are deeper than the surface wood.
Gas cutoff needs replaced, it won't work in semi right now.
Missing Bayo and cleaning rod.
Rear sight is slightly bend downward
Bolt gets stuck closed often, I have to boot it open usually.
My current plan is to shellac the stock to fill in the deeper grain lines until its all smooth. Russian Red of course.
Maybe replace the barrel, I've seen a few chink ones with all the fixings on it, I assume the threads are the same. This would allow me to use the much cheaper chink bayonet
Remove grenade valve and replace with a normal gas block (If i keep this barrel) and find yugo bayonet
Retard mode: hybridize it with an AK to accept mags, use ak gasblock (probably a krink) and bayonet. Also tempted to make it an FAL hybrid.

Turns out AKM sights are considerably higher than an SKS's. Didn't try 74s, I would think they would be too small to go over the barrel without it being turned down and then it might be too thin.

Firstly it's an SKS and your property. If you want it preserved for future generations I expect it in a lovely display case both unmolested and unfired. No not altering it is not good enough. You must never fire or use it if it is to be properly preserved.
Second if you feel it's an actual gun with use modify it to your hearts content, however it's good form to not do anything that cannot be easily reversed. In addition keep the original parts in case you ever sell it…this way the buyer can have a mostly unmolested gun.
And that's about it. Everything else is the opinion of bitchy children.
Oh and lastly stripper clips are a ton of fun but for actual use are inferior to any decent removable magazine. Unless the mag is 10 rounds in which case the strippers are a better option.

Does anyone have one of those norinco sks-m or d? I would like to see how they did the magazine adaption. My current plan is to take some (de)milled polish ak47 receivers i have to use as the front lug and the mag catch. I can't seem to find any good pictures of this area. I can find the trigger groups fine, just not how they cobbled the front together.
Going to replace the top wood with a vented metal one, will be elongating it to replace the rear sight because rear aperture sounds better. I haven't figured out how that fal hybrid one got rid of the rear sight and still retains the handguard, the elongated gas pistol isn't a problem. I'm pondering modifying the front sight block to have a detent and bayonet lug so i can just bore out an ak74 brake and use that bayonet. Not too fond of the sks attached bayo.

I did most of the disassembly today. Barrel is completely depoped.
Pic related is what I'm aiming for. I have an old pps-43 magwell I'll probably use as a doner mag catch and I'll try and incorperate the flared housing into the stock. The rest of the housing is too small to be of use outside random fab parts.

You're gonna need to do some milling in order to get a catch for the front lug of the AK mag as well as the bolt so it goes through the feed lips of the mag. You can do a M model mag release which requires a small modification of the trigger group.

I'm aware. The bolt will be easy, I could do it with an angle grinder if needed (won;t because heat), the receiver will just need a little slimming on the inside, I can use a die grinder for that. The front catch is the main concern. I might be able to get it with a drill press if i take the barrel out, I don't have a good picture of the area for proper closeenuffs. I could probably dremel the dogshit out of it anyway, that grinding stone would be fucked afterwards though.
I need to get a mill. Pondering about getting one of those mini mills (not form hazard freight) so i can make all sorts of goodies.
