Ok serious attempt to post time. Contrary to your wikipedia article beliefs, there are two translations of sword from Chinese, 剑 and 刀. We talk about the first one because it is named "Jian". The original Jian was a pretty worthless piece of shit meant for attacking one/two people at best. This was because the only people to wear them were either,

1) Aristocrats or the wealthy

2) Intellectuals while traveling They probably couldn't do shit with it though,

3) Military commanders of the entire battle who usually didn't fight themselves There are exceptions but that's pretty rare.

In addition, chinese tradition up until the Qing dynasty had the habit of conferring a sword with their rank on it to their subordinates to do work for them. The most famous of these is the 尚方宝剑, or in elongated form, the symbol of his/her highness' imperial without question. seals could be faked. The jian there had the dimensions of 103cm (total length)， 71cm (blade)，29cm (hilt)，(blade width)5.5cm，(blade thickness)1.5cm，(Wieght)2.5kg and usually some eloquent design embedded of the name of the dynasty and a imperial seal. The sword was usually in incredibly important decisions to grant to generals or magistrates were to able to investigate/ fight to their discretion, and all persons not the emperor must immediately abide to answer any commands given to them on the pain of death. In addition, magistrates were allowed to execute royal relatives any officials of higher rank without asking for the emperor (先斩后奏, literally, the power to first behead and then answer to the emperor). 5) Jian of the martial arts originated from four. Chinese goverment allows these as training weapons but has neutered them by making them outa copper and coating with steel so…..

The dao is basicly the flat piece of metal to hack people with, the Japanese Katana is adequately named the "wodao" in Chinese, or literally, the "bent sword".

However, the evolution of the Dao to the same period of the Jian is aptly described in english to something along the lines of, "machete" or "soldier's sabre".

Now keep in mind that in historical China (pre firearms) there are eighteen short weapons, of which these two fall under. In the Three Kingdoms period, longer pole arms are the spear, (long stick) and the three different types of Da Dao (lit. Big blade, think a spear but with the curve like a katana at the end with a larger width).

Most of the fighter frontline generals did not use Jians as their main weapon

Zhao Yun- Shu General, used a spear and a sword as backup in several situations, noted to be the best fighter after Lu Bu

The Jian afaik aside from emergencies and urgent communications are the only weapon that are allowed for everyone with the exception of the imperial guard who had polearms. Even so, the rules go like this. There are these things call off horse markers. Where only the emperors were allowed to remain not on foot. Those lie outside the palace (and tombs). Outside the administrative areas (where emperor works) there is a regulation that all non urgent messengers and persons aside from emperors current entourage must take off their shoes and non Jian weapons. I've noticed there is a difference in cutting force when using an angled as opposed to a straight hilt. Most of the mechanical difference happens in the wrist and gripping technique when making a cut. You can have two straight bladed swords, one having a curved hilt, pointing straight up then try relaxing your grip so the blades point parallel with the ground without bending your wrist or letting the swords fall out of your hand. The curved hilt allows you to apply more torque to a cut, not necessarily giving it a better angle to cut at, but definitely if you needed to lop off a limb every time a curved hilt is optimized for that.
