There's no discharge in the war!

Question, please help. Hey /k/ so we have a deactivated Mg-34 in the backyard shed and I touched it with my bare hands and left it alone. Now I'm worried that the oil from my fingers will ruin the gun somehow. I don't want my fingerprints to stain/rust the gun. Am I being paranoid? I was going to wipe the gun down with alcohol wipes. Necessary or not?

Pic unrelated …

>ruin the gun somehow

It's deactivated. Already ruined.

Deactivated gun. Left in an outdoor shed. Why would you be worried about the little finger grease you left behind?

Yes, necessary.

After you wipe it down you should re-oil the area, especially if you're in a humid environment.

How long ago was the dewat done? If it's an older one it might just be salvageable.

Wipe down the weapon, re oil and vid related

good luck OP

f1f680 No.533321

Apply light oil to surface. Wipe off with clean cloth. Done.

If you're really worried, wrap it in an oil soaked cloth, or better yet, bring it inside and throw it in a gun sock with some desiccant packets.

Now onto a more pressing issue, you have claimed to own a deactivated MG-34, yet you have not posted pics. Please rectify this error immediately.

>throw it in a gun sock with some desiccant packets.

Oh hell no. Desiccant packets aren't forever, and there's been way too many guns ruined by something throwing it into a gun rug or gun sock and forgetting about it.

94f9f9 No.533330

Okay OP here. So I just went and inspected the neglected guns. There is actually two an MG-34 and an MG-42. They have been wrapped in garbage bags in a shed for a number of years. A few months ago, I pulled out the guns to inspect them. Stupidly, I did not properly cover them back up with the garbage bags. The flash hiders on both guns have been exposed to the air and consequently both flash hiders are fairly rusted out. I'm not sure how much of the rust is also because of my fingers. Although it looks bad, I am confident this is a minor issue and the guns can be restored. To properly access the guns requires shuffling a lot of stuff around, so tomorrow I will go and take the guns out of the shed. I will then remove the oxidation, oil the guns, and seal them and put them in the safe with the rest of the family guns. They are too important to be left rusting in a shed. I will post pics tomorrow when I pull the guns out.

If its a dewat the ATF probably has the serial # on file and ifs its reactivated in a non-ATF approved way the ATF will rape you and dick the bullet holes in your dog.

>>533330

Find the paperwork for them if they're legit DEWATS.

OP translation:

"Hello /k/ I touched a gun that was used to kill someone, how do I make sure the cops don't find my fingerprints?"

Answer:

You can't, all modern fingerprinting is done on a mass scale in fume hoods, it exposes 100% of all fingerprints even those in odd places. Little brushes and dust are only used on TV.

Your best bet is having a good reason why you touched the gun.

I concede the point on desiccant packets.

But still, a good gun sock will wick away moisture, and having them inside in anything would be a damn sight better than having them in a plastic bag in an outbuilding.

>>533330

>remove the oxidation

Just don't go and do something stupid like take sandpaper to them.

I don't know how well it would work on a blued finish, but for cleaning rust off of chrome I always used scrunched up aluminum foil. The idea being that it's hard enough to scrape off the rust, but not hard enough to scratch the chrome.

>The idea being that it's hard enough to scrape off the rust, but not hard enough to scratch the chrome.

Chromium is the second hardest metal known to man after diamond, while aluminium oxides are much harder than steel. I advise using a rust converter or taking it to a gunsmith.

0000 Steel wool works wonders for surface rust. Anything more and you'll want some naval jelly.

1) Get a jerry can of cosmoline

2) Get a wooden crate

3) Place the gun inside the crate

4) Fill the crate up with the cosmoline

5) Douse the whole thing in gasoline when need arises

The gun will literally last for centuries, maybe millenia that way.

You can also just cover them in a thick layer of oil, but that will eventually drip/dry off and leave the gun exposed. Best way for long term display storage would be oiling it up every couple months and keeping it in a glass

>>533330

>flash hiders

They are recoil increasers, not flashhiders. They are important to the functioning of the guns, an if they have holes they may not function properly anymore.

Though I believe you can buy some new ones online.

They are also quite easy to make (or at least ones that function like the originals) if you have a drill, a turning machine or something similar.

>>533368

>Chromium is the second hardest metal known to man after diamond.

Yes, but there are other materials much harder than Chromium that are not metals. Ceramics for example. This is why you can use a simple ceramic platter to sharpen most knives.

Soak it in industrial rubbing alcohol for a day after brushing it while submerged, light it on fire, then soak it in a lye bath for 8 hours. Wear gloves and clean it properly afterwards. Either the alcohol or the lye tends to remove all residue from surfaces in these scenarios. Thank me later.

Pretty sure posting on /k/ is enough to alert the ATF.
