/k/, is it true that the A2 birdcage is the best compromise between a flash hider and muzzle brake?

No, it's just the best flash hider other than long and fragile prong designs period. It has enough compensation to give the middle finger to New Zealand (possibly others) laws preventing flash hiders and allowing brakes, but nothing worth noting. 5.56 isn't really worth braking as the shockwave will do worse for your aim than the recoil you lost.

Best compromise would likely be the J-Comp, which seems like it provides good recoil reduction, decent flash reduction and minimal blast.

It's more to prevent dust kickup than anything else, the whole idea of it being a combined FH/brake is kind of a meme afterthought to make it look cooler than it actually is.

I got an older FSC556 MB/FH on my carbine length upper. Great for quick follow-up shots, but I mostly use it when practicing alone with multiple targets. I prefer a linear or a birdcage when shooting with others.

Personally I like Manticore Arms Eclipse. Cuts down on flash well, and doesn't ring like a lot of pronged flash hiders. Downside is it's a bit heavy, but that's never really bothered me shooting with it.

Personally I'll probably end up with Ase-Utra muzzle brake somewhere down the line, since it'll make mounting a can easy. Currently I'm using a standard A2 birdcage.

Nofun here. Is flashing really an issue? As I can recall from my conscription there was never a visible flash from our guns during daylight shots and nothing that could ruin your night vision or realistically betray your position under cover during night shots.

It's more apparent when the guns are pointed at you. Depends on the gun type too, longer batteries typically have less flash but no flash at all is ideal.
