Let's talk NV for a second, /k/.

what makes certain uniforms more/less IR reflective?

which materials are the least IR reflective?

i heard solid black uniforms stand out extremely brightly against NV compared to the environment, is this true? what about O.D and khakis?

last and most important question, if you were to make a ghillie suit from scratch, which materials/dyes would you use to make it as NV-proof as possible?

pic somewhat related, second uniform stands out bright compared to surroundings, whereas the first one blends in well.

>which materials are the least IR reflective?

There's some work on materials/coatings that would reflect no light at all (including IR). That would probably stick out like a sore thumb though - the man shaped black spot in your field of view.

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/407438/materials-that-reflect-no-light/

Maybe BAE will be able to miniaturise their 'stealth tank' project (vid related) to the point where a man could wear it, which would pretty much make you a ghost to NV.

It only looks man shaped if hes standing right. Its the "name that pokemon" game with people.

Still, regardless of the shape a perfect black spot stands out just as well as if it was lit up like a Christmas tree.

I think you're assuming a bit much about how it would visibly translate. could look like all sorts of shit, but it would be better than making you a bright glowing blob.

>>515234

Nah, human brain fills in or glazes over black spots.

698c0b No.515246

>>515242

The human brain/eye locks onto whatever doesn't fit. The one (effectively) monochromatic - OK, monotonal with the colour loss from IR - patch will stand out.

>>515235

As we're talking about trained, professional, soldiers I think that level of attention is a reasonable assumption. Maybe less so if they haven't slept for 4 days or something like that but under normal conditions it's a fair assumption to make.

>>515246

I'm gonna need some peer reviewed studies on that…

698c0b No.515253

>>515248

I don't see you providing any studies. Think of it like this. Camouflage works by minimising the differences between the subject and its surroundings.

Under an IR or visual light camera/mark one eyeball the overwhelming majority of views are composed of varying shades, tones etc. The one unvarying object will stand out because, well, one of these things is not like the others - all the eye can do is detect different shades and tones, that's how you see things.

I don't think British and Canadian populations have been separate from each other for long enough to allow our eyes to get too dissimilar - where did you get your idea from?

29c3a1 No.515254

>>515253

I'm meaning I think you're assuming a lot by speculating that it would just be one shade of solid black.

We don't even know that's what it would look like in NV, and we certainly can't assume that it would "stick out" any more than a regular old fucking shadow.

If you want to go and test it out, be my guest, but until you do so this whole line of conversation is just speculation, and you're being a bit arrogant about how right you are considering that.

698c0b No.515256

>>515254

We're told that this new, experimental, material would reflect no light. Literally nothing. 0 photons bouncing off the surface and into your eyes. There is no way for one part of that object to look any different from any other part. No assumptions here.

>speculating a lot

>we don't know what that would look like in NV

Night vision simply amplifies ambient light so looking as some Vantablack paint with some night vision would tell you almost exactly what looking at something that doesn't reflect light.

When you look at something like Vantablack you just see emptyness which is what not reflecting light is it wouldn't look like a

>shadow

because its 3 dimensional and has mass unlike a 2 dimensional massesless thing

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vantablack

>>515248

Just because humans have a blind spot (that if if simulated by the brain would look like a black spot) that the brain fills in doesn't mean you can't see perceive a lack of light or the lack of reflection of light. other wise when ever you turned off the lights your brain would start filling in the void with god knows what and you'd never "see" darkness or experience the void that is a moon light less night.

So please don't pretend to know what you're talking about when it comes to human experience then ask for scientific studies.

>>515234

You're basically correct although it NV might fill in that void of light with a different colour. (depending on the kind of NV you have) but you still see this man shaped thing moving around that looks like a kind of silhouette.

>>515094

>if you were to make a ghillie suit from scratch, which materials/dyes would you use to make it as NV-proof as possible

embed video sort of related its the closest thing i could find to answer your question. I think to help further your answer you could look up the factors in how night vision differentiates object and lets say the biggest factor is texture you should focus on the fineness of the texture of your ghillie suite.

gonna need to see a study proving that…
