You know, I'm starting to come to the conclusion that they're some kind of urban legend. I hear a lot about them and there's certainly a lot written about them, but I've never actually seen physical evidence of their existence. Granted there are a few videos floating around online - but you can do a lot with special effects these days so they can't be taken as evidence.

How on earth would I conceal a longbow upon my person? The damn thing is 6ft tip to tip, I'm a big guy but it's going to stand out. Besides, in the event I need a concealed weapon, unshipping, stringing, notching and firing the bow would be far too slow for an appropriate response. I would imagine that for one of these firearms, being a much more powerful weapon, the time between set up and shot would be infinitely greater than for a longbow.

Oh of course, a bow is not a weapon that can be drawn and fired quickly. With extreme skill and extensive training You could speed that up to the point where you only need 10-20 seconds from realising that you need your weapon. It's why, until the ban, most would carry a dirk or other form of short blade. From what you're saying these hand guns (presumably the descendants of the old experimental handgonnes) combines the speed of the dirk with the range of the bow - but surely the limits of saltpetre production would make these incredibly rare or expensive, even with royal agents being given power to enter private homes and farms to collect the shit produced there.
