Why does Quran read like a series of disjointed tweets, instead of a coherent flowing message/narrative? Even the individual chapters don't make much sense. I know Muhammad received the messages over decades and in short bursts, but shouldn't they still flow and build up on each other? The subject matter changes from verse to verse much of the time. Or am I a brainlet?

Also someone said you can't understand Quran without hadiths and knowing history, so you need secondary sources . what?

real question

The Quran uses redundancy quite a bit. Important things are repeated in different phrases so people can't try and distort their meaning. As for the jumping around, I'm not sure. Some chapters follow a narrative, like the one about Joseph(AS).

The Quran has a lot of info, but its quite dense. A lot of the topics don't make sense unless you know when they were revealed. For example, it says that you shouldn't pray while drunk, and that drinking alcohol is forbidden. The first verse came out long before the second, but you need history to know that.

There is a movement known as quranism, where they ignore anything outside the Quran. It leads them to twist interpretations a lot to suit their needs. We had a guy here a year or so back who claimed that alcohol was allowed because of the "don't pray while drunk" verse, as if it was some sort of loophole.

Because we leave it as it was revealed, rather than edit it to our own reading tastes. It takes a bit of study and several readings to get the pattern of it. It also helps to study the Sunnah.

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding. [3:7]

I guess I expected the words of the Creator to stand on their own in terms of quality, structure, flow and coherence. Without needing secondary source explanations.

Maybe I'm just arrogant or deluded.

>movement called quaranism

yea and it's obviously heterodox and misguided, I just expected more coherence and flow and power from the "primary Source".

Everything you've ever read in your entire life has secondary source explanations. There's nothing wrong with commentary. Qur'an itself mentions the Sunnah, so it's not really secondary.

ya but not everything needs such explanations, sometimes they are just a bonus

yep, im not against sunnah im talking about Quran itself.

also as a side note it would've been nice if the sunnah was mentioned or defined in the Quran, via a table of contents or prophecy, as in "such and such person, born to such and such a family in this year, will write such and such hadith, titled X and it will describe this and that."

Like a divine table of contents outlining which hadiths to follow

Perhaps, but if everything were just handed to you, then where would be the joy of discovery?

You're very close to getting exiled to /modernislam/ again.

I'm watching you.
