Names are an important aspect of culture. We can see in traditionally Christian countries there being a tradition of incorporating biblical and religious names. But there is always the indigenous people's own names present. E.g, Englishmen have the religious names: Joshua, Paul, John, and so on, and then ethnic names: Oswald, Wilfred, Edward, etc. In Islam, is this also true?

All the converts I see turn their back on their heritage by adopting Arab names. Is Islam really so all-encompassing it basically aims to create a mono-culture?

It is not necessary to rename yourself on conversion. Some folks just choose to do so. It's also not turning your back on your heritage to change your name. Your name is not your heritage.

There are ethnic Arabic names too.

>All the converts I see turn their back on their heritage by adopting Arab names.

They are adopting ISLAMIC names not arabic names. I know many reverts that take name Muhammad for instance. There is a popular arabic ethnic name Muhannad (a type of sword). I never saw a revert take that name or any ethnic name.

And there are many names that are potentially multiuse. Like if I am in the USA I might name my son Gabriel. But when I write that in Arabic I still write جبريا (Jibreel). So when my son is in muslim community/country his name is Jibreel and in English country Gabriel. Same with Aaron and Haroon, Moses and Musa, etc.

Converts aren't force to adopt Islamic arabic name. If you look at a Chechen, he will be named Magomed, not Mohammed. If you look at a black african muslim he will be named Mamadou or Magname (Which is derived from Mohammed), if you look at a turk he will be named Mehmet, not Mohammed. But I admit that some converts make mistake when they turn their back to their culture and pick up and arabic name when they convert. Islam isn't there to supress cultures. You're not forced to adopt an Islamic name, you can be named John and be muslim. Also John is Islamic. In arabic John is "Yahya" and Yahya is a prophet. Just like in arabic we say prophet "Dawud" so therefore David is Islamic. But you're not forced to have an Islamic name, you can still be named Edward and be muslim.

If the name is "Christopher" or "Paul" "3-in-1 Body Wash" then yeah you got the short end of the name stick. I also know a brother whose parents named him "Stalin." He is now Saif alhamdulillah.

Yep exactly obviously if the name isn't compatible with Islam it's not allowed
