Can someone give me a rundown on what he believed, what his major teachings were, etc.? All I and most westeners know of him is the slander levied against him as the alleged destroyer of the Islamic Age of Science. I'm interested in him as a philosopher.

Google bbc4+ghazali. That podcast is dope. Ghazali was a sunni philosopher that argued for Khilafah and he traveled the muslim world seeking knowledge and meditating.

No, he was not "anti-philosophy", he was opposed to the metaphysics of his contemporary philosophers. Look up the Ash'ari school if you want a rundown of his beliefs, absolutely not antiprogress either. Just read the incoherence of the philosophers
