"Allah is but one God. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs." [4:171]

Alhamdulillah.

We have a new brother and he is happy and free. May Allah make the straight path blissful and wide for this new brother. Ameen.

>Stephen McGown opens up about six years as al-Qaeda hostage and how he converted to Islam

>South African hostage Stephen McGown, who was held by al-Qaeda in Mali for nearly six years, said on Thursday he had been well treated but was distraught to have not be freed before his mother died.

>Speaking just 10 days after being released, he said he had converted to Islam in the Sahara desert, and added that he was determined to be positive after his ordeal.

>McGown, 42, who also holds British citizenship, sat next to his wife as he spoke for an hour to reporters, saying he had no idea if any ransom was paid, and telling how he was sometimes held in handcuffs and chains at night with two other hostages.

>"I did my best to see the best in a bad situation," Mr McGown said.

>"I didn't want to come out an angry person and be a bigger burden on my family," he said.

>"Sometimes you are miserable and you want to fight everyone (but) I did not want to become a mess. I want to come home a better person. He paid tribute to his mother who died in May, saying she was "an amazing lady and I can imagine the difficulties she went through."

>He said he built a simple hut of grass and sticks to survive the cold desert nights when he often had only one blanket, adding that he feared for his life three times in the first three months after he was captured in 2011.

>Mr McGown was kidnapped at a hotel in the historic trading city of Timbuktu in Mali's north along with Swede Johan Gustafsson and Dutchman Sjaak Rijke, both of whom were subsequently released.

>The South African government has insisted that no ransom was paid to secure McGown's release, which was completed on July 29, but some reports have suggested $4.2 million was handed over.

>McGown said he had been better treated after converting to Islam, being given better clothing and food.

>"Before the desert, I was a Christian. I entered (Islam) of my own accord," said the ex-hostage with a heavy beard.

>"I see many good things in Islam. It requires a very good character, a very strict character."

>Mr McGown admitted to being "in the dark" over world events in the last six years as the hostages had only had a radio for a short time and no books in English.

"I think I'll keep the beard." As quoted by RT.

Good choice. Allahuma barik lahu.

I hope this is genuine and he finds God one day. Because there is a phenomena called Stockholm Syndrome.

1.) Stockholm Syndrome is a psychobabble excuse for when otherwise "proper" people conduct themselves in a manner that cultural gatekeepers deem untoward.

2.) Stockholm syndrome in this case would mean the man joined al Qaeda, not Islam. Someone with the "diagnosis" of Stockholm syndrome identifies with the captors qua captors, not a tangential association to their religion. Perhaps orientalists will come up with a new psychobabble term to describe a prisoner who adopts the religious belief of their captors but such a term does not currently exist.

3.) Allah guides whom He wills, how and where He wills. Brother Steven's path to Islam shouldn't be delegitimized.
