That refers to those who came before the Prophet of Islam.

"If anyone desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost." [3:85]

But couldn't that also be rendered "If anyone desires a religion other than submission, never will it be accepted from him"? So if a Christian imperfectly submits to what he thinks is God's will isn't his intention still worth something?

If that were true, then you would accept that Jesus(pbuh) did not die on the cross and, thus, would no longer be Christian. Obviously I'm not a mind reader, but Qur'an is very explicit with such things.

That is to say, yes, we are all imperfect - though we strive to be. However, believing that Jesus is God isn't just imperfection, it's blasphemy.

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad, he who amongst the community of Jews or Christians hears about me, but does not affirm his belief in that with which I have been sent and dies in this state (of disbelief), he shall be but one of the denizens of Hell-Fire. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 218)

Jews were muslims for a long time. Christians were muslims for a very short time.

I'm not a christian or the OP, if that's what you thought. And yes, it is blasphemy, but most people just believe whatever they were raised into believing. Not every christian is a professional anti-Islam polemicist or a professional theologian.

The christian religion that remains today is built on breaking the first commandment. They knock on the doors of the people to invite to their shirk/self-help/get rich schemes. As a rule they refrained from homosexuality but this is changing. That is their millah.

This is only applicable to a small number of Protestant Christians.
