"Allah is but one God. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs." [4:171]

Peace be to you.

I hear that Shi'a believe that Jesus was never on the cross.

I hear that Sunni believe that Jesus was briefly on the cross but was replaced by someone else.

Is this correct? Do you know who was the replacement? To those who believe Jesus was taken off the cross, how was it done in such a way that none of those observing noticed this happening?

There are a lot of answers to your questions. We generally believe that Jesus(pbuh) was raised up to Allah and did not die at all. He will also return at the end of time.

Otherwise, some believe he was put on the cross while others don't. Some believe it was Judas put on the cross in Jesus' place. As for how nobody noticed, obviously God can make such things happen.

Qur'an 3:55; 5:117; 19:33 are the pertinent verses to look up.

O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ [3:55]

If you're looking for indepth accounts there are books of israiliyyat - stories of the prophets of bani Israil that have been preserved by Muslims. We preserved them but we don't require any faith in them whatsoever.

When it comes to the precise exactitudes of what happened on golgotha we say Allah knows best.

Here is a basic intro to how muslims see Isa bin Maryam peace be upon him.

Edit: just to be clear we require belief in the prophets of israil, but not these specific accounts that we compiled.

Allah swt did not give revelation to Matt, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, and Ringo. He gave it to JESUS as. We Muslims have an actual - and the final - revelation given by Allah swt. Christians do not have the uncreated speech that was spoken to Jesus - peace on him.

The christian gospels are a collection of what are known in arabic as seerah and ahadith that are attributed to Jesus that include fragments of the Injeel by happenstance in the speech of Prophet Jesus. Muslims have a comprehensive seerah and ahadith with verified chains of narrators (isnad) that Christians lack. Christians never distinguished between biography, utterances of the prophet, and revelation. That is the observable basis for their ignorance.

We have a full seerah, a spectrum of classified ahadith, and most importantly the actual revelation. Creating the holy ghost character to explain a lack of rigor in recording and evaluating the life, times, and remarks of Prophet Jesus (as) just opens more problems. So does sidestepping lack of the uncreated speech by claiming Jesus is God. The analogy would be if we had no Quran but said "it's a mulligan, The Prophet is Allah." astagfirullah wa audhobillah.

Daily reminder:

>The Jews; in Kufr they are further than the Nasara. Even though the Nasara are much more extreme in ignorance and heresy. These people knew Haqq, they abandoned it purposely and for this reason they will be held responsible for their actions and be punished. -Sheikhul Islaam ibn Taymiyyah.
