I heard there was a way to get the Saudi government to pay for you to become a Shaykh.

Is this true? are there any good resources for this?

To become a Sheik, you'll need to either apprentice yourself with an elder Sheik or attend a university.

As for the particular Saudi government paying for your education, you'll have to speak to the Saudi consulate. I've never heard of such a thing myself, but if such a program exists, then they would know.

You can apply for Islamic University of Medinah or Umm al-Qura in Mecca.

However,

You should understand the way of students of knowledge is to first exhaust the knowledge of their own land. I love your enthusiasm brother, but if you were already a student of knowledge you would already have shuyukh with connections.

You must become a student of knowledge first in your own land. You should also memorize the Quran since traditionally this is the first step of anyone dedicated to seeking knowledge. In the most prestigious Islamic seminaries of Saudiyyah there are students that memorized the Quran while still young lads.

Waiting until being in a new land to be a dedicated student of knowledge is a red flag of someone that might burn out.

You should live near a masjid that teaches quran or a quran academy - they are plentiful. If you have bad arabic and weak Quran then your chances of being accepted are diminished and you'll be in remedial classes for years.

Also, a lot of islamic boarding schools meant for younger lads will also allow older brothers that need the fundamentals to attend them. These are all over the world, cheap, and many are in areas with idyllic climates. Think the caribbean, south america, south africa, indonesia/malaysia. Canada and the US have a bunch too.

You could live on a small madrassa campus and work a job when not in class. Boom.

That's what i'd do but I blinked and now I'm old with a family to support. I know people that went to these schools, azhar, etc though. They all had very good prereqs of Quran and language.

Maybe you should contact your saudi embassy / consulate. It can't hurt.

There's a brother on reddit (old thread) who reverted to Islam in Europe and left for Morocco and now he stays at a free madrassa just eating delicious food and memorizing Quran. SubhanAllah, Allahu Akbar.
