Even if you don't have enough to pay regular zakat (nisab)….

EVERY MUSLIM MUST PAY ZAKATULFITR

In the US currently this is estimated by most communities to be $12 for you and every person in your household. Or even dependent outside your house.

This must be paid before Eid Salah.

Pay at your masjid or online.

In many neighborhoods in the United States it is easier and more direct to purchase and deliver canned goods (i.e. Campbell's Soup, fruits, vegetables, evaporated milk) to food pantries.

I'm not trying to be rude and please don't be offended but: Are you trolling? It seems like you're suggesting that muslims should just give food to american food pantries when we can help STARVING muslims overseas and local struggling muslim families instead?

I donate to food pantries, and we collect at my masjid. But that is sadaqa and neighborliness: not zakat.

Please don't take me the wrong way.

Giving food to a food bank is a great thing, may Allah reward us for it and our intention. But dear brothers I respectfully put forth that this is not acceptable for zakat. And even if you believe it is: Please I beg you to give your zakat not only fisabilillah but to Allah's slaves. This is better for you directly and for your Ummah. It is the axiomatic application of zakat via Rasoolullah, then Abu Bakr ra, then bait ul mal and is the precedent in all fiqh. Please brothers, support your local communities but also support the muslims near and far with your zakat which - alhamdulillah - is easy to do since we have verified and respected charities.
