Layla

Full near I came unto where dwelleth

Layla, when I heard her call.

That voice, would I might ever hear it!

She favored me, and drew me to her,

Took me in, into her precinct,

With discourse intimate addressed me.

She sat me by her, then came closer,

Raised the cloak that hid her from me,

Made me marvel to distraction,

Bewildered me with all her beauty.

She took me and amazed me,

And hid me in her inmost self,

Until I thought that she was I,

And my life she took as ransom.

She changed me and transfigured me,

And marked me with her special sign,

Pressed me to her, put me from her,

Named me as she is named.

Having slain and crumbled me,

She steeped the fragments in her blood.

Then, after my death, she raised me:

My star shines in her firmament.

Where is my life, and where my body,

Where my willful soul? From her

The truth of these shone out to me

Secrets that had been hidden from me.

Mine eyes have never seen but her:

To naught else can they testify.

All meanings in her are comprised.

Glory be to her Creator!

Thou that beauty wouldst describe,

Here is something of her brightness

Take it from me. It is my art.

Think it not idle vanity.

My Heart lied not when it divulged

The secret of my meeting her.

If nearness unto her effaceth,

I still subsist in her substance.

Etiquette of the Path

What delight is there in life other than the companionship of the fuqara?

They are the sultans, lords, and princes.

So befriend them and learn the ways of their assemblies,

And keep your obligations, even if they ignore you.

Profit from (your) time and participate always with them,

And know that (Divine) satisfaction distinguishes one who is present.

Make silence obligatory unless you are questioned, then say:

‘No knowledge have I’, and conceal yourself with ignorance.

Regard not any fault, but that acknowledged within yourself

As a manifest, clearly apparent fault, though it be concealed.

Lower your head and seek forgiveness without (apparent) cause,

And stand at the feet of Justice, making excuses (in your own behalf).

If a fault appears in you, acknowledge it, and direct

Your pleas toward that within you which comes from you.

Say: ‘Your slaves are more worthy (than ourselves) of your forgiveness,

So excuse us and be kind to us, oh fuqara!’

By giving preference to others thay are exalted, for it is in their nature,

So do not fear that they will punish or harm you.

And in magnanimity toward the brothers be forever limitless,

Out of feeling or understanding, and avert your gaze if one of them stumbles.

Observe the shaykh attentively in his states, for perhaps

A trace of his approval will be seen upon you.

Display earnestness and be eager in his service;

Perhaps he will be pleased, but beware lest you see annoyance.

For in his satisfaction is that of the Creator and obedience toward Him,

He has granted you His good pleasure, so beware lest you forsake it!

(Know) that the Way of the Folk is (now) decadent,

And that the state of the one who preaches it today is as you see.

When shall I see (the true Folk of God), and how am I to have sight of them,

Or my ear hear news of them?

How can I or one like me dispute with them

Over spiritual experiences about which I am not familiar?

I love them, am courteous to them, and follow them

With my innermost soul- especially one person among them .

They are a folk noble in character; wherever they sit,

That place remains fragrant from their traces.

Sufism guides one quickly by means of their conduct;

A fitting harmony is theirs, delightful to my sight.

They are my loved obes, my family, who

Are among those who proudly hold up the Helms of Glory.

I am united with them still, brought together in God,

And through Him our transgressions are pardoned and forgiven.

So (may) blessings (be) upon the Chosen One, our Lord

Muhammad, the best of those who fulfill their vows.

How much longer will you travel backwards? Don't go into unbelief and denial, (but) come to [true] religion!

See the sweet drink within the poison (and) come to the poison! Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

Even though you are of the earth in form, still, you are the [fine spiritual] thread (made) of the (very) substance of Certainty.

You are the trusted (guardian) of the treasury of the Light of God.

Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

Know that when you have bound yourself to selflessness, you will escape from (attachment to) self-ness.

And (then) you will leap away from the bonds of a thousand traps.

Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

You were born from the generations of (Adam who was) an appointed Deputy (of God), (yet) you have opened an eye to this base world.

How sad that you are happy with (only) this amount for yourself!

Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

Although you are the protecting spell (which guards the treasures) of this world, you are a Mine [of Heavenly Jewels] within yourself.

Open (your) two hidden eyes. Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

Since you have been born from the ray of the Majesty (of God) and you are (born) with a fortunate rising (sign) of good omen,

How much longer will you groan and wail about every non-existent (worldly thing)? Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

You are a ruby in the middle of a granite rock. How much longer will you deceive us?

(The truth) is apparent within your eyes, O friend. Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

When you came from the side of that proud beloved, you came (in a) drunken, kind, and heart-attracted (state).

You (also) came with joyous eyes and full of the fire [of love].

Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

Shams-i Tabrîz, the king and cupbearer, has been holding the cup of everlasting (life) before you.

Glory be to God! What excellent pure ("wine")!

Come, at last, to the Source of the source of your own self!

- Mawlana Rumi
