Certainly the promise of Allah is true. Let not then this present life deceive you.

Hey, I'm going to be headed for work in a very specialized role in the future, and it's going to be in a country with a heavy Muslim population. I am told that we will have all the interpreters we need, and that Arabic study isn't necessary, but can be good for us if we want to really get into it. Now, before anyone asks, this is a humanitarian role, and I won't be anywhere near a gun, however, last cycle, there was a guy who got lost and ended up being lost without being able to talk. It turns out he could have been back within the hour if he knew the language. So what I am asking is, what is a good resource to learn Arabic. I have about 9 months before I leave, and I plan to use most of my time to study up for this when I am not working. I have previous experience learning language, so I think I can get it done. Any Arabic speakers here /

Almost forgot, we are getting cultural sensitivity training, so that's not going to be an issue, but what if I want to be liked instead of just being inoffensive?

You can either do a community college Arabic course or go to any da'wah center, where there's usually a course in Arabic. I don't understand the point of cultural sensitivity training. I assume you're smart enough to go through life without constantly pissing people off and Arabs are just people like any other.

Well, unless you're going to be in some deep rural area where tribal culture is more important than Islam. Those people can be brutal if you're not careful. Kinda like going to a small Southern US town.

Being American is offensive and it is a direct challenge to a fight. Nobody likes Americans, not even other Americans.

Speak for yourself, friend. I like the other Americans I personally know.

Well, yeah, that's kind of where the humanitarianism is going to happen.

Then I wish ya luck, bro. Those tribesmen are some of the nicest people on the planet, but they can be set off by the slightest thing and they have absolutely no sense of humor.
