Suicide is a sin, but not in the case of mental illness. A person who kills themselves without knowing their actions, that's different.

Different conditions apply when it comes to someone who has lot touch with reality.

To all those suffering from sadness or depression, know that it isn’t your fault. It isn’t because you’re weak. It isn’t because you’re just not grateful enough. It isn’t because you’re just not religious enough. It isn’t because you don’t have enough faith. It isn’t because God is angry with you. To all the well-meaning people who tell you this, just smile. And know deep in your heart that the tests of God come in different forms to different people. And know that, by the help of God, every test can become a tool to get closer to Him. It's not always kufr. Especially in his case, he was depressed. So I don't think he would be considered kaffir. We don't know his state of mind at that time, if he really was suffering and could not see a way out except death. So if this was his mistake then he might be forgiven inshallah.

it's a big sin but not kufr therefore your brother is really in need of forgiveness.He is not a kafer insh'allah.

I know what you mean,it was destiny. Now we are getting into the free will argument. And that's a bit devious. What we believe is that it was his choice.

Suicide is not considered kofr at all. It is just haram. However maybe your brother will be forgiven if he had a mental illness.
