What is the ruling on nodding and swaying slightly while in qiyām? I only do it when in private prayers, because I've never seen anyone else do that in a Masjid.

I've done it since I was very young, first learning prayers.

And now that I think about it I think it sort of resembles what some at my mosque do during Dhikr. I keep my hands where I'm supposed to. And the habit really does make me more focused on giving praise to Allah (SWT). So I'm not sure if it's a bad habit I need to break or not.

pic unrelated.

Sunniforum and Ummah.com are absolutely useless to ask. For obvious reasons.

Thought since this board's "Jamaat" is a bit more denominationally mixed and there's a larger percentage of people here that aren't completely insane that someone can give an opinion.

It's not something that's very easy to do when you're in the mosque. So, be considerate when praying among the brothers. However, it's something I've often done myself. Almost like nodding to a beat. It helps when learning the prayers.

Some people will say that it shouldn't be done because it imitates the Jews (they rock back and forth in prayer), but there is absolutely nothing against it in Qur'an or Hadith. Just make sure you're aware of your surroundings and don't accidentally bump into your brother in prayer.

Huh. So I'm not the only one. Thank you, brother. And no, I don't do it at Jumaah or, as a rule, really ever in the Masjid to avoid one of the uncles slapping me or something.

I did actually consider that it resembled what the Jews do, not that I had the intention to imitate them. At all. But then again, certain forms of dhikr resemble that too. And scholars have made loads of justifications for the dhikr and adressed the accusations of "bid'ah" for it. Just wondering, are you or anyone else aware of any fatwa addressing doing those movements? In prayer?

I've seen many brothers who rock back and forth a little or sway a little. I don't think anyone has ever formally said anything against it; but if someone did, you can probably rightly ignore them. Qur'an and al-Sunnah are all you need and there's nothing in there against it.

I think it's okay to nod but bobbing your head might not be allowed. Not sure about swaying, it might be okay to move a little to get the balance and qiyam right but swaying as in rhythmically moving your body might be disallowed.

I try to stay still and concentrate as much as possible but I do nod now and then expressing assent.
