A line implies a thickness to see the other beings in that plane. therefore height would have to exist in order for the people of Flatland to see each other. They even address that in the book and in the movie. I like the fact that the government wanted everyone to be one color and not multicolored. Honestly Immin classes b/c it's a nice alternative to being bored at work and it's likely nessecary for social survival.
