3. Focus your mind. Again, easier said than done. They say hypnosis is about subconscious suggestions, but I find this to be a bit of an unhelpful idea because you really do need to consciously focus on listening to the file and not getting distracted by other thoughts. This is difficult and, at least at the start, you're going to get distracting thoughts all the time. But don't get frustrated when this happens. It sounds counter-intuitive but the more you notice yourself getting distracted the better at this you'll get, because when you notice you're thinking about something other than the hypnosis you can actively dismiss that thought and refocus. Don't be discouraged, even if you realise your mind has been wandering for ages and you've not been paying attention, just forget what you were thinking about, make sure your body is relaxed and start listening again. Developing this habit is key.
4. Pretend. Chances are, you aren't going to experience trance the first time you try it. Your mind will wander too much and you won't be able to relax properly and you'll get distracted by sounds of traffic, etc. When it comes to hypnotic suggestions then, pretty much everything is going to go through your conscious filter, and you'll be thinking things like "well, I could just *not* do that." or "I want this to work *properly* but I feel like I'm just pretending."
First of all, I want to point out that these thoughts are a perfect example of distracting, unfocused thoughts. They're a telltale sign you aren't in trance because you're busy thinking about the effects of trance rather than solely and ONLY listening to the hypnosis. So, what do we do with them when we realise? Forget them, stop thinking and focus completely on the words of the hypnotist. Do the suggestion anyway.
Yes, every time you think consciously about doing something in hypnosis before doing it you will be "pretending" and it won't be "real," but what you're doing is further developing that unconscious habit of following suggestions without thinking about them. You get into this habit and keep interrupting and suppressing any distractions and eventually you WILL do the suggestion without thinking about it at all.
In fact, if you have any kind of habitual behaviour that you repeat often you might realise that you don't even think about what you're doing while carrying out that behaviour. This is essentially what trance is, except with hypnosis the idea is that you can get really good at simply following ANY instructions without thinking about it. But you can't develop a habit without training, so just "pretend" you can follow instructions without thinking until you really can.
I'll leave it there for now. Trust me when I say there is more to trance than feeling silly about playing along to some pretentious sounding recording. Unfortunately, it does take a bit of practise to really shut out those distracting/wandering thoughts and focus on the words. But the first time you do successfully trance makes it worth the effort, even without complex hypnotic suggestions. Just the feeling of experiencing time passing while awake without being bombarded by thoughts is incredible.
