Can you remember what it was doing before the freeze? Had it been idle for a long time beforehand? Are your settings in options->maintenance and processing set up to do big jobs like db vacuums in idle time like this?
Typically, the program does not freeze completely. It is usually my bad code hanging the gui thread for a while. It pretty much always comes back, but for some of these giant db jobs it can be twenty minutes. My general recommendation is to let it run, and in future set up idle job options to fit your usage
I also say 'just kill the process and restart' if the hang is taking ages, since that is not a big deal 99% of the time, but you couldn't. I haven't heard of not being able to kill the client before. Python isn't typically that rude to OSes–which OS are you on? How were you trying to kill the process?
