I've never experienced that. But I suppose it depends. I've been welcomed, as have friends, but welcomed with friendship, not with popularity. But neither I nor friends who got into this stuff expected to become popular.

They can be cliqueish, it's true. If you're gregarious and can chat up random people comfortably, though, you'll be fine at a furcon.
Again, though, it depends on what you want, OP. Friendship? Yes. Popularity? That takes lots of work. Love as in friends, yes. Love as in free sex everywhere? The stereotype isn't all that true. Love as in twoo wuv? Maybe, but that, too, takes time and effort, just like it does anywhere else.
