Man, I fucked that up. Can't even delete it.
The fandom gets too much and too little. Furry is in the same weird superposition as the internet at large. We're caught between "Haha, it's just a joke on the internet" and "Actually, this is the centre of global commerce.", and it's the same with furry.
People always play up how welcoming furry is and then write it off at that, but what's fascinating is how furry operates as a market, and how many furries take reminders of this (i.e. "you're looking at $1.5 million worth of fursuits in this photo!") as a form of approval.
Simultaneously you have otherwise total normalfags telling everyone their weird fetishes by using the same twitter for furry and non-furry things, and the continued belief furries are pariahs of the internet that everyone hates. The internet basically has a hangover, it can't make up whether furries are abhorrent or normal now, and furries themselves no longer neatly fit into the box of being a weird nerd thing or something most people are into. It doesn't help that running through all this - coming back to my point about being a market earlier - there's a massive divide that results from how much money people have offline, in real life.
Really the most interesting thing is how people still have this image of basement dwelling neckbeards, when most furries - even the perverts - look like relatively normal middle/upper-middle class people for their age range. And that's why furry gets both too much and too little respect - on the one hand, the respect from being an upper middle class engineer still carries over when you're dealing with these people, on the other people still underrate the kind of people the fandom is expected to include as a mixture of a nerd stereotype that in many ways never actually existed, and a mid-2000s scene/emo car crash. personally i'd like more actually-diagnosed trainspotting autists and less vapid american trust fund kids tbh.

The only people I ever hear complain about trust fund kids are just jealous they have to work like the rest of us peasants tbh. I'm related to a trust fund kid despite being from a piss poor branch of the family myself and it's objectively a superior life to live in every aspect compared to normal working class people.
▶ No.70855>>70856
>>70853
I'm not going to deny I'm jealous and even bitter that life dealt me shit cards, but that's not really my point. the problem is that they shift the dynamics of a community/fandom and make it harder for inferior normal people to get anywhere. First, they've got the money to buy whatever they want - so obviously that pushes up the income threshold for taking part. Second, because they're already well-off, there's less risk for them all-around in being openly furry or otherwise running against social norms. First, their local area is more likely to be liberal and tolerant, and second even if it isn't the costs of punishment are easier to bare when you're sitting on a pile of cash: Worst case scenario, they take their moneybags and jet off to California. Finally, but related to that: their life experiences are radically different so it's harder to relate with each other, empathise with life issues, etc. Trust fund kids lose their social media job and it means they can't buy a YCH this month (D: poor soul) unless dad opens his wallet, I lose my job and I'm homeless. (meh)
It's not necessarily that they're wrong, it's just that from my end (and from the end of the majority of society) they're a class apart. as it happens I think they're only going to get more influential as time goes on, and so from a historical perspective are "right" even if I'm not a fan. Ideally, you'd think internet communities would be equal, or have hierarchies other than income - income is a very real life way of classifying people. You'd hope furry would do it by talent or how interesting you are or something, in the sort of way imageboards are supposed to filter posts by quality rather than having authority by post count, but that's a fantasy that doesn't really play out. Which comes back to my general point, that furry is mostly interesting as a study in income disparity and how rich kids spend their money.
But that line of thinking is complicated and reminds people about how they're one late paycheck away from the gallows so it's not really surprising people refer to imagine that furries are all chris chan autists on social security and redneck horse-botherers.
▶ No.70856
>>70855
That's a good breakdown. I know a few artists that are rich, including one that was already rich when they e-begged for precancerous medical treatment lol.
But yes, internet communities can only keep themselves detached from real life class disparities for so long. For example, even if the community were judged by artistic ability, trust fund kids would still dominate. Most people aren't born with the luxury of choosing art to get into for a living; it's not useful enough to pay bills unless you become fantastic at it (which poor people usually don't since good instruction costs money) or, like Jasonafex, worm your way into a good niche. Only kids with the option to have skill that doesn't consistently get bills paid (or one that does if they went the concept art route but choose to draw furry art all day instead) would be able to become good furry artists, and that leaves you with trust fund kids.
tl;dr Rich kids are the furry übermensch and the only thing to do is deal with it. But really, that can be distilled to what everyone already knew, which is that being rich makes you a better person from cradle to grave than being poor.

Here's a little test to see if an artist is actually in a bind:
During any period in which they're taking "emergency commissions", ask if they'll do something they don't normally do for full price or more during that time (nothing too out there, mind you; like for example if they do 99% anthro pin-ups, ask them they'll do ferals and/or certain tame fetishes, like bondage or lactation)
If they say no, they aren't in an emergency and are just trying to swindle people for quick money

Actually the reason they do this is because it's easier to ask people to do than to ask them to select no address. If you select an address for a paypal payment that is not a "gift", it is expectedf of the seller to print and use a shipping label, and they can get in shit if they dont.
