There should be, at best, an adversarial relationship between the two where the hoster's goal and ideological backing is to distribute porn to the masses without considering artist's 'rights' unless backed by the letter of the law. Guaranteed this has happened because the site got so mainstreamed that all the admin/mod team hang around with popufurs and the like.

I honestly doubt it makes much of a different either way. Your work being posted on various websites isn't directly responsible for it being popular, it's more like the other way around. If someone's art is good and popular, THAT causes it to become shared everywhere.

You can't have someone creating fucking incredibly detailed and popular art at least on par with what Naylor produces and have them fade into obscurity with 15-20 views on all of their images, it's mathematically unlikely. Especially if it's new or animated content. The same way, someone won't magically double their fanbase in a year just by manually shilling their work everywhere. It will have an effect, sure, but not a massive one. Kind of a difficult thing to nail down without a time machine and having exact metrics of who views/pays for what, but I honestly doubt that advertising yourself will do much other than cause you to reach the same peak faster, or change the size of your audience by 20-30% in either direction.

The issue I think is that unless it's a drag and drop replacement for serving files like exhentai does with Hentai@Home (basically host a standard web server on volunteers' machines and link images from those), not many people will care about it for practical reasons. Having to install a browser extension or something as easy as a torrent client might work, but if it has to be set up and configured manually, 99% of the people will take one look at it and go "nah fuck this".

e621 is already not a perfect place to "archive everything" because artists can already request a takedown of their art for any reason:

The e621 mods cannot be trusted, are anti-user. Purposefully purging images without advance notice, and claiming that the artists matter more than the users, since the artists need to make money. Even though, as everyone can see, the top-tier artists make over 10,000 dollars per month. So, if artists who people do like are making money, then the system isnt broken. e621 is just becoming like a cable company, where the artists are more important than the consumers.

And yet, if e621 disappeared today, we'd be out of 1 million images.

I see some people in this thread are already recommending IPFS and I do as well.

I was thinking that we ought to start making scripts that get each days new images, and add them to an IPFS folder that contains either all images on e621, or multiple folders that hold only a portion (like 1 year at a time perhaps) since the total size of e621 is probably over 1TB.

I had some trouble getting hydrus to do what I wanted, but if people are already intending to fully mirror/archive e621 with hydrus and hydrus's IPFS plugin, let me know where to point my client and I'll help.

There is no legal basis for the change. e621 could've kept going the exact same way it has indefinitely, they wouldn't even have to adhere to the DMCA if they're located outside the US. All art has SOME value, even if extremely limited. I'm of the opinion that if we have the means to archive it all with basically no effort involved, then we should. If only to have a database to analyze and measure trends in what's being drawn and how.

Paywalls though, that's another matter. As counterintuitive as this may sound, the "value" isn't actually in the product itself, but in owning it. It's the same principle as cosmetic items in games and microtransactions. Nobody gives a shit about the actual product being sold and everyone who buys them ends up regretting it, but it drives you fucking crazy to know that it exists and that you don't have it. Going through an artist's gallery and seeing a thumbnail advertising a 20 image folio immediately triggers something in your psyche and makes you go "fuck I need to see that, what if it's something good and I'm missing out", even if you wouldn't have given half of a shit if they posted those 20 images for free.

I can't even count the number of games, books, ROM collections image packs, movies and limited edition shit I've pirated just because I felt like I had to, and literally have not taken a look at ever since.
